Apple CEO Tim Cook offering coffee date for charity auction

Apple CEO Tim Cook is offering the chance to chat over coffee, and all it might cost is a charity donation ? to the tune of $50,000.

charity case

With proceeds going to support The RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights, the Apple chief has promised the winner the opportunity to sit down over coffee with Cook at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino for between 30 minutes and an hour. The offer went live on charity auction site Charitybuzz and currently has two bids.

The auction, which has an estimated value of $50,000, has 20 days left in its duration. The auction's winner will be able to take a guest for coffee with Cook. The bid does not, though, include travel and accommodations.

The legal terms of the auction state that Charitybuzz expects "polite manners and respect for the generous donor," and the winning bidder and guest will be subject to security screening. Bidding currently stands at $5,250.

Apple as an organization has a mixed record with charity. The company's late founder, Steve Jobs, was reluctant to publicize his own charitable works when alive, which made some question whether Jobs even engaged in charitable giving. Notable Apple personalities have previously donated their time, designs, and money in the past, though, to a range of causes.

Apple's corporate charitable efforts have seen a noteworthy public-facing increase under Cook's tenure, however. One of his first changes implemented in 2011 was a charitable matching program, which has raised millions of dollars for nonprofit organizations.

Seems like it could be a half-assed scam attempt.

The most expensive cup of coffee you'll ever have. Its currently up to $14,333 as of 2:46 PM EST. It would be nice if someone without this kind of money would have an opportunity to do something similar.

It'll probably be at Apple's HQ.

I cracked-up when I read that.  I really do hope it's for real.  Obviously, if I had that kind of money to burn for a cup of coffee (for charity of course) I'd jump at the opportunity.  He's a fascinating guy.

I wonder how much it would have been if it were with Steve Jobs.  That would be epic.  Heck, probably cheaper than paying for a college education - and getting more out of it!

If it's for real, kudos to Tim Cook for doing it.

This question is disconcerting for some reason.

Only if the coffee date ends in an offer of employment.

Hey, give me only $5 and I'll pretend to be Tim in a meeting.  Ready?  Here we go:

"Sorry, but I can't tell you about any future products."

"No, you cannot visit our secret labs."

"What?  No, I am not going to tell you where I go for dates!"

"Who the hell is this Tallest Skil nut you keep talking about?"

    "Guards!"

I wouldn't pay for this. I don't know what Tim Cook likes besides fitness.

At least if it was Steve Jobs you could talk about the past, maybe ask him about preparation for keynotes, etc.

I remember joking about chatting with Jobs at WWDC once with some Apple employees, and they told me it'd be a pretty one-sided conversation: you talking and him ignoring (or insulting) you.

It's rising like AAPL stock price a year ago.  Once it stops climbing like crazy, everyone will be calling for his head and have a dozen ideas how to fix the problem.

I'll volunteer to provide the coffee. I have 3,000 lbs of the best coffee in the world sitting in a warehouse not far from Apple HQ.
