Apple logs 50 billionth App Store download

Less than two weeks after Apple started counting down to 50 billion app downloads, the App Store on Wednesday reached the landmark number.

50 Billion

Apple gave word of the 50 billion downloads through its webpage, which displayed the above graphic in honor of the momentous event. The image shows an iPad mini with the word "Thanks" written in FiftyThree's popular Paper drawing app.

No details as to who downloaded the 50 billionth app, but that person will receive a $10,000 gift card to the App Store. In addition, Apple will award a $500 App Store gift card to the next 50 customers following the 50 billionth download.

The countdown to 50 billion ticker first launched on May 2, and was followed by a featured promotion on the company's homepage.

Since launching in 2008, the App Store has seen significant growth. Apple in April 2009 launched a countdown to 1 billion app downloads, which was followed by the 10 billionth download less than two years later in January 2011. Most recently, Apple CEO Tim Cook said in October 2012 that App Store customers had downloaded more than 35 billion apps, meaning 15 billion apps have been downloaded in the past seven months alone.

I had 22 tabs lined up with all my info inputted, but as I predicted they timed out, sort of. Those moving letters stop moving and when I clicked submit it behaved oddly and I didn't get the "Thank You" message. I got one form filled out before the thing fully timed out. Hopefully I get lucky.

It would have been more amusing if it occurred doing Google's keynote.

Do they count downloading updates and downloading an app again to reinstall?

Don't forget, boys and girls, you have to pay the INCOME TAX on that $10,000 gift card just like do if you win the lottery or Wheel of Fortune. Remember the cars Oprah gave away on her show? The recipients had to pay taxes on them. Oh, I guess you forgot about that one, eh.

If the state you live in has an income tax you have to pay that too. So I'm guessing you could be on the hook for about $3000 in taxes for that iTunes card.

You realize the countdown is way behind the actual number, right?

What if the country you live in isn't the USA?

There is no such tax on winnings in Australia.
