dvd region locked...

hi... i had my dvd on regoin 4 and then i inserted a dvd region 1 and it asked me if i wanted to switch region and that i had 4 switchs left... and i clicked the lock to prevent further changes... but when i click on the lock to make a change it doesnt do anything and doesnt asks me for my password and i cant change it no more... so is this a dvd player bug?? or something?? im on a 700mhz ibook with jaguar

    This is actually not a bug.



    It's the movie industry's way of grabbing up more and more money.



    Basically, they came up with this concept of "regioning" to cripple DVD players to only play DVDs from certain parts of the world. The industry can get more money that way, making people buy various different players or different versions of the DVDs.



    Apple's DVD players use a software switch to determine which region to lock onto based on what your first few DVDs are. That's why it gave you that dialog. Your DVD ROM is now locked into playing only that region of DVDs.

    Well, some folks have found a way to hack the firmware in DVD-ROMs to become regionless again. These hacks likely void your warranty and can probably ruin the drive if not applied carefully.

    If the drive's already locked, it's too late. no more other regions. locked = locked

    no. locked = locked. at least that's what I heard.

    Maybe not. I had a PISMO that was locked and I changed the firmware to make it region free. Definitely, after that I could change the region. This might depend on the manufacturer of the drive.
