    Sorry, I was refering specifically and only to the timeframe & detail level of the near-term product descriptions of the G5s. The part that you quoted was predicting MWNY and was rather confused (to say the least)... which is to be expected according the JD's theory.

    I hope it turns out to be true, but only time will tell.

    Any way it really isn't that unrealistic. Intels already at 2.2Ghz. Why shouldn't we get a 1.8Ghz G5 by mid year.

    I don't believe in the 1.8Ghz G4 though.

    I don't buy it at all for one reason: Firewire 2 and gigawire are not the same thing. Gigawire is a wireless protocol that's been talked about here for a long time. There's a thread with the patent information included. The guy's a fake or the 'chat' is fabricated.

    No one actually knows what Gigawire is, the patent info is available at the uspto site and doesn't specify wether or not the tech is wireless. Most of the info quoted about Gigawire is "I saw this on another thread" which isn't really saying much.

    btw- why would apple call any wireless technology by a name containg "wire", it really doesn't make sense.

    I always find it cute when people affirm things as fact when indeed it is just speculation. I have seen no /solid/ evidence that Gigawire is not firewire 2. Point me in the right direction perhaps?

    That's only a little more valid than saying "My cordless phone is already at 2.4Ghz, and I've had it for a couple years. Why shouldn't we get a 1.8Ghz G5 by mid year.

    Maybe that's what the optical port actually is...

    My bad, guys and gals. I just looked some stuff up and the patent (or copyright or trademark, whatever the hell they're called) basically runs the gamut from peripheral connection technology to wireless/cellular communications stuff. So, basically, I have no idea what it is (or what I'm talking about )

    Please resume your regularly scheduled pipe-dreams...

    [edit: forgot to mention that I still don't buy it.]

    If and when Apple releases the G5, I would expect them to clock it at a lower frequency then the chip is capable of. This would allow Apple to have a cushion of time in case Motorola has delivery problems with higher speed G5's. Apple would be able to increase the speed a couple of times (of the current G5's) which would probably eat up a year or so of pm speed bumps. This year or so of time would (hopefully) be enough for Motorola to work out the issues of the next generation of higher speed G5's.

    Remember the G4 fiasco...

    If Apple does this I will put a rock through the windshield of one very famous Gulfstream jet.

    Unless there's some sort of subnotebook in the works... Mini Ti?

    I doubt any of this is true. Seriously. No one would have all of this info except Apple executives and certain board members.</strong><hr></blockquote>

    From a different site the rumor is that Apple was going to stop producing the 12.1" iBook altogether. So, it's not unreasonable at all to only keep one.

    FINALLY! AI sent me my password back.

    Anyway, either this guy is a fake, or he has some pretty high standing at Apple. Even PowerMac team engineers don't know the release tables for other product lines. Everyone at Apple who is involved in a certain project knows ONLY about that project, or possible other projects that have to do with the one they are working on.

    I think we will see G5s very soon. A G4 speedbump like everyone is talking about would have been announced at MWSF.

    This is either well thought out or the real thing. This was a conversation. I think it;s hard to pull this type of conversation off with specs, info, and everything else if you are making it up. The 2-3 month update sounds interesting as well and would explain the March rumors. Well, sounds good to me </strong><hr></blockquote>

    The computer salesperson at Frys on Sunday said nearly the same with the big rumor of the G5 in February when asked about upgrades and when expected.

    What's Frys? Are you saying someone else is saying the same thing as this person said in the topic?

    Funny, everyone and their trained monkey has been saying January 22nd is D-Day for new PowerMacs, now we've got someone saying February 22nd. How long till we start hearing March 22nd?

    Solid evidence?!?! Well would you trust a United States Trademark Database? (if that's not good enough I don't know what is) How does this USPTO database entry in any way shape or form link Gigawire to Firewire... The text for Firewire is TOTALLY different.

    Hmm... Of course I am almost positive this is pure BS, but, if it were true, the thing that would amaze me is the dual g5 @ 80gflops.. One of the LEADING pc-based (500 grand) systems only does 50.... I am guessing (of course supposing all of this is true), that it would be the 1.8 ghz dual model he talked about. Anyways, if you do the math, the beowulf i am talking about has ~100 1.0 gigahert Xeon processors... In other words, amazing. I sure would LIKE this to be true.
  • Reply 58 of 116
    80gflops because of altivec? i think the post is total bs. I'm hoping very much for G5 and other upgrades and such, but i dont think it will happen. Apple always seems to be 4 steps behind everyone else lately. I would love for this to be the time that they catch up but it probably wont be.

    My question is this: will the G5 run with OS9(not classic)? I would assume so, but who knows?

    expect the G5 in 2003. very slight speed bump on the Powermac until then, and a whole lot of bitching and more speculating on AI until then, and even then more dissapointment.

    Always hope for the best(1.6GHz G5) but plan for the worst(800MHz G4).

    dumb theory, but here goes:

    Megabyte = 1Mb &

    Gigabyte = 1000Mb

    hence:

    Firewire = 400Mps &

    Gigawire = 1000Mps?

    could gigawire be used as cabling inside the machine?

    maybe apple are removing all the bottlenecks in the machine. the bus, the cabling, the chip, etc.

    when you look at the bandwidth available in SG machines, the total bandwidth throughout the machine is over a G/sec.

    I think(though no one KNOWS) its pretty safe to say gigawire is NOT firewire2...however, gigawire would be a pretty good name for a 1 gbps+ transer cable.

    at any rate I am looking forward to firewire2, and hoping that it actually IS scalable to 3.2 gbps. cause if thats the case...then apple will be WAY ahead of PCs in that sense, probably for years and years(it took the pc world like 2 years to get USB 2 while the whole time Macs had firewire)
