Doesn't make sence but G4 tower as lame as rumored and then March the G5s announced but not shipping for a month or so? There still isn't solid evidence of a tower realse on the 22nd, just speculation at this point. Could just be the iMac shipping date. I know, doesn't make much sence

KidRed, I think all we'll see tomorrow is the high end iMac shipping.

It's not an Apple hotline server nor a secret, it's just a private server where I guess an Apple employee was at, according to the original poster. (private to protect the server admin from getting busted for warez, I'm sure)

I've seen IPs on hotline that trace back to Apple. 17.xxx.xxx.xxx.

Tarbash- Hope so, if no G4 towers come out, looks good for a Feb/March G5 launch.

So then Apple employees go on hotline while at work? That's brave.

tonton's right about one thing...it's very doubtful that any one person at Apple would have all this information. And, anyone who would have it would certainly not be on Hotline (oh yea, Phil Schiller cruises Hotline for blurry bootleg copies of 'Swordfish').

Besides anyone with such an intimate knowledge of Apple's longrange plans would also be smart enough to know that things change quickly in the industry and nothing is certain. If you were on the Board of Apple, signed an NDA, were the godfather to Steve Jobs' children and only had 24 hours to live maybe, maybe, you could get someone at Apple to discuss future plans. And you know what they'd say? Well, things like "we hope to have incorporated blah blah by the end of the quarter," or "we're shooting for a late fall release of blah blah..." No one with any real knowledge of this stuff says "Oh yea, we're gonna have this stuff out at MWNY, and it's gonna have blah and blah and blah." Jeez Louise, I think Jobs changes stuff the night before a show.

Sounds a lot like how the Apple Sage writes, so makes sense (see other thread)

First of all, to everyone that says "only execs at Apple would know all of this", well I'm sure Apple employees go out with each other, get drunk and talk about all sorts of stuff they're not supposed to talk about.

And to those who say that "it's impossible to know all of this stuff in advance", well I think all rumors are supposed to be taken with a grain of salt. Anyone who did know this info, would know that it's all subject to change. So much so that it gets redundant to keep repeating "it should" or "I think for MWNY", etc.

So, I don't believe the style of the writing hold any evidence that it's made up.

anon: the G5 will be announced next month during Seybold i think like the 22-26 or something

anon: check out the starting G5: 1.2 gig PPC G5

    anon: 256 DDR Ram

    anon: NVidia3 64 video

anon: USB 1.0 (unlikely 2.0 will debut now)

    anon: Firewire 2.0 aka Gigawire

    anon: 60 gig harddrive

    anon: Superdrive

    anon: Gigabit ethernet

anon: Optical port * More on this later on

    anon: $1699

This is why I don't believe it. it says 1.2 GHz G5? There is not supposed to be a 1.2 GHz G5 according to motorola. The processor is supposed to start at 2GHz+! I think it's a big crock if you ask me
  • Reply 69 of 116
check the roadmap again the G5 starts at 800MHz.

Well, could it simply be an Apollo (or a variation of it) labelled as a G5? I don't think you have a very strong argument. Besides, havent mot roadmaps been off in the past anyway?

Yes, I read what 'Apple Sage' had to say, but I to me it sounded like 'Apple might do this, or they might not.'

This is what I call a "snowfall" prediction. Weathermen have this great thing where they try to sound like they know what's coming by saying "we might see accumulations of up to four inches or more."

What a great line! It covers less than four inches, more than four inches, and exactly four inches! You can't go wrong with a prediction like this!

So I predict G4 towers 'at up to 1Ghz or more!'

I say this guy is a big faker....

I don't think Apple has any set release dates for this stuff - they know they're in a hole and need to get out of it ASAP.

This guy is also over-extending himself. Anyone who's ever proven to be a true insider has only had info. on a few key things within a single product family. This guy claims to know about hardware, software, desktops and portables. Even inside Apple, info. doesn't flow like that to anyone who would even think about posting on these boards.

Aside from inaccuracies - i.e. why would the PowerBook gain USB 2.0 but not the PowerMac? And the fact that Gigawire is most likely something different than Firewire. And, FYI, USB 2.0 is a likely inclusion depending on the status of faster Firewire. I don't think it would be a big loss for Apple to leave it off for the time being. But whatever's going on these boards, it's done - Apple's been waiting since MWNY for the processors from MOT to stick on them. (I know this to be fact).

Sounds like a bunch of rehashed rumors to me - it's been rumored for some time that Apple has a pro audio app in development (sorely desired in OS X right now, by the way). And since he talked about everything else, he might have thought to mention new display rumor (17"/19"/22") that's probably the most likely of them all.

This stuff just sounds like somebody's reasonable guess rather than inside info...

I'm interested in the proposed optical port. Has this been mentioned before in this forum? If not, assuming this info is not genuine (which seems to be the majority view) I wonder where this came from?

It sounds entirely plausible that if they are proposing a new pro audio application that would combine with FCP and DVD Studio Pro, that new powermacs may have the same digital audio optical ports that are found on higher end DVD players and TVs with Dolby Digital 5.1 & DTS capabilities. Does anyone know whether this type of connection would have any advantage over USB-based digital audio solutions?

I have read elsewhere that Powermac/MacOS X-based solutions have very low latency compared to Wintel solutions, so I wonder if this is part of a move by Apple to gain a stranglehold on the digital audio creation market, in a similar way to which it has obviously been targeting the video-creation market - both areas which have always had a relatively strong mac following and where Apple are obviously looking to move into the more higher-end solutions, which should be achievable with the release of 1Mhz+ G5s in the not too distant future.

If there's an optical port it could possibly be (finally) for true 5.1 surround from your mac. But since most computer speakers are USB, and your Mac already has a CD/DVD player and FireWire for DV input....I really don't know what the advantage would be that would make it worth the cost of including one of these things.

The only possibility I can think of as a pro audio user is for ADAT sync with Apple's new audio software - the optical port could provide 8 channels - but again, considering the cost and number of buyers who would actually use this, I don't see how it's worth it for Apple.

There are plenty of USB/PCI/FireWire solutions out there for *anything* one could wish to do with an optical port on a Mac....and that's another reason I think these predictions are shit.

I too was most interested in the mentioning of an "optical port".

However, the only optical ports I have seen in use are for "video archiving to DVD.

Essentially, you take a miniDV deck or camera, and dump the video into the optical port and it writes the DVD, real time.

It is also used in Tivo application regarding HDTV.

My guess, is that if this is a reality then it will be more video related, because audio is still not quite the bandwidth gorilla that video is.

Someone should start an optical port thread.

The optical port would allow connection to a stereo with an optical port. This is the standard that stereo is using now. In case you have not heard a Sound Blaster Audigy system with 5.1, it is just incredible. I have a soundblaster for Mac and also one for my athlon. The sound from the Mac is no different than the normal mac output, but the athlon with optical 5.1 is a thing of beauty for the ears. Trust me, this is worth the money for gamers, musicians, and for anyone planning to work with or burn DVD's. This will be standard for all computers in the future so why not on the Mac. Anyway I am ready to buy today if something comes out....I hope.

onlooker, you really need to go and look at the latest Motorola roadmap. Their first roadmap with the G5 (>2 years ago) listed it as "2+ GHz", but the current one says 800MHz - 2 GHz.

Apple usually throws beer bashes every other Friday or so, and especially for days like Cinco de Mayo, but I'm sure many employees drink responsably.... except for the ones JD used to come across.
