other companies can make profit on phones at this price point, why can't Apple?

Those phones are 40¢ worth of plastic and sold in "emerging" markets where if they fail the user is no longer able to call customer support anyway.

Who is making money at that price point? Only Apple and Samsung are churning a profit. Moreover point me to a 99 smartphone that is unlocked and is not old inventory.

Lol! Is that a joke? Nokia lost money on four of its last five quarters, and nobody expects that to change.

No, no joke. Maybe you should learn how to read a financial report before posting. Nokia can, and is making phones that retail for $99 and making a profit on them
