How Screwed am i? (error -36)

i cant access my idisk anymore (im a paying member), it says error -36. if i use the i disk utility instead of the finder's go menu, it says major internal error, idisk utility must quit.

i cant find any info on this on apple's site, except that error -36 is very, very bad. any suggestions on what this is and how i should proceed? i dont want to lose any data. or should i just back up everything i can and start praying?

(note: my web pages are still up and showing... i can get my mail and other stuff, just suddenly cant open idisk on my computer.)

Try downloading and installing the 10.2.3 update.

sorry about loooooooong time to reply... had oral surgery and i have been out cold on painkillers for days.

while i was unconscious, hubby installed 10.2.3...but upon restart, it would never get past checking the files and would hang. i couldnt help him in my unconscious over-medicated state, so he got frustrated (he gives up easily) and reinstalled from the jaguar disk. many of my custom icons are gone but everything else looks intact. i just tried idisk and it does work. hubby the genius calls apple after reinstalling jaguar and they tell him there is a conflict with 10.2.3 and HP drivers, and that he has to unplug the printer. i dont know if it was that simple...have you heard of this? i will re-attempt the upgrade when i am feeling bettter.

i have no advice or anything, i just want to complain. i think it is really sad that OS X has errors that require reinstalls to work...well maybe don't REQUIRE, but that is the only sane way to get things working again. I blame this on the complexity of unix, and perhaps it is unavoidable. Either way, it reminds me of another very popular OS, one produced by Microsoft.

There was none of this crap with Classic OS

Certain HP Printers had an issue with 10.2.2, but I don't know if it was fully resolved in 10.2.3 yet. Here's an HP page that may help you:

hey, thanks for the info. looked at the page and according to HP, deskjet printers shouldnt cause any problems. still have no idea why 10.2.3 wouldnt start up. figured the apple support people couldnt have actually had a correct answer.

i actually have no major gripes with os x...

want to borrow some painkillers?

well i did go a little overboard on that last post, perhaps to the point of some serious irony.

anyhow, i think X is better than classic for most people familiar with computers, etc, but for a novice, X is just far too complicated when it comes to troubleshooting.

it's ok, i understand where you were coming from. i did know how to troubleshoot and fix my pre-OS X macs pretty well... and now i'm lost in unix, which can be pretty frustrating at times... but i think it's just a matter of teaching old dogs new tricks... but X is so terrific, it seems odd when i occasionally still work in 8.6 or 9, like something is missing. not that it was terrible or anything, but i much prefer X.

hey defiant!! you showed up finally!! too late, i wont make your list this time... be quicker about it in the future.

no, the error is gone. had DL'ed 10.2.3 but computer wouldnt start up again after that. reinstalled jaguar from disk to get it working again. i now have a folder full of files called "previous system." there are even some mach kernals in there. it's all in the trash, after i rescued whatever settings i could, but i am afraid to dump it. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Aw crap now I'm getting this like mad. I was using the iDisk earlier today (also paying member, on second year of iDisk now too), disconnected all drives and put computer in sleep mode earlier. Came back and I keep getting the: Error = -36 code. I can't get in from my Mac or the 2 Win98SE machines in the house which generally are really snappy with iDisk. It was the first time I was doing a major revamp of my site in like 6 months too. I am so pissed! Any ideas without doing a full rebuild? I figure if it isn't only a Mac thing it has to be something else. We all sit behind a Netgear RP614V2 Firewall/Gateway which has never been an issue thus far. Maybe I'll try another reboot, but this is a pain in the butt! I need it up really bad for various reasons. As noted in one of the far earlier posts, Apple Tech support pages were little to no help. Any help/ideas would be much appreciated.
