iPod hard disk problems

Well, here goes...

My lovely brand new 10gig iPod was working wonderfully until a couple of hours ago. I use it with windows, and a friend of mine connected it to his iBook, which unfortunately ran out of battery just as he was looking around in it (and I think OS X leaves .ds_store files around everywhere doesn't it?.) I guess this screwed something up, because after I disconnected it there were no songs listed on it anymore. The space was still used, but no songs appeared on any of the lists.

I tried taking it home and resyncing it with my computer. No luck. Musicmatch didn't detect it as an iPod anymore even though the drive icon still appeared in windows explorer. So then I tried reinitializing it with the 1.2.1 updater a few times. It formatted the drive, and guess what? Total screwup and I get the infamous folder with the exclamation mark.

I try restoring it a few more times with the updater but no luck. In my win2k disk management I notice that the first partition (39MB) seems to be mounted as the disk in my computer unlike before where the second 9472MB was mounted. I dunno. Then I went and did something really stupid: out of desparation I deleted both the partitions on the iPod and tried to restore it, hoping that it would repartition the drive from scratch and put everything that's needed back on. No luck. The updater claims it cannot mount the drive anymore and refuses to do anything. So thinking that I'll put it back to normal I try to recreate another partition of 39MB, but once again luck is against me. For some reason the win2k disk manager doesn't allow me to create a partition smaller than 9.4gigs. So unless I use some other partitioning software I can't recreate that beloved 39MB partition anymore, and have no hope of getting anything done on my own...

HELP!!!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

EDIT:

Well I ran the updater again, and the 39MB partition has reappeared so that's good. I still get the exclamation point next to the folder though. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Ok, I think I can help.

Try to reinstall the iPod software with the cd that it came with. It's probably the system software of the iPod that messed up.

    I'm sure this will work.

sorry about that defiant... I fixed it after a few hours of trying to get it to work and those other two morons know it but kept the discussion going anyway...

if anyone's interested I'll explain how I did it... but it was mostly luck

well... it's probably mainly luck that got it working again

anyway out of desperation I installed xplay and noticed it had a restore ipod program. So I ran the program and did as it told, which was to download the mac file iPod_1.2.1.smi.bin... in a couple of seconds that file had been stuck into the ipod. Still no luck. The exclamation folder still appeared. But then I ran the updater for windows again, and it finally worked again. Whatever at least it works now...

unfortunately new problems have appeared (look at my new topic about the ipod in the genius bar )
