In OS 9 it was easy to assign key-combinations to the function (F1 to F15) keys.

Is this built into OS X? How'd you do it? I can't find it covered in any help topics..

No, unfortunately it's not built into OSX. Having tried out several shareware solutions, I was directed to Youpi Keys, a freeware program that is both stable and versatile. It enables you to assign key shortcuts to all kinds of commands and actions, both local (in one program) and universal ones.

You will probably find that as you get used to it, there will be a LOT of actions you use frequently and therefore prefer having on the keyboard rather than merely under the mouse cursor.

You can find it in Versiontracker. Good luck.

Use <a href="http://perso.club-internet.fr/phupe/english/YKIndex.html"; target="_blank">Youpi Key</a>. free, fast and application specific.
