Comcast vs Mac

Despite the title I DO NOT mean for this to turn into a "Comcast sucks" thread. I'm just having trouble with the cable modem and need some ideas and better info.



I was out of town for a week and took my iMac along. I unplugged the cable modem while I was gone. Came back, hooked it all up and it didn't work.



I'm running an iMac with OS 9 and US Robotics cable modem connecting using DHCP. The modem boots up and connects fine. The problem seems to be the DHCP on the Mac getting the IP et al.



They came out and checked the line and it's fine. Comcast is telling me that about two weeks ago Macs started having trouble connecting to the network. I was told to check the Open Transport version. Of course all my software is up to date. They said they were contacting Apple to figure out what was up.



The one odd thing is that the "activity" lights for the cable side and the comptuer side seem to flash at the same time. Almost as if the cable side sends a signal and the coputer side responds.



Help? Ideas? Experience? Troubleshooting? Hints?

    hmm, i've run into this before with my cable company, and i'm trying to remember what fixed it.



    does OS9 have a way for you to ping outside addresses?



    i wonder if it is connecting, just not getting DNS info.



    (although you said it's not getting an IP address either, correct?)



    i assume you've power cycled the modem (man i've come to hate that phrase )



    and there's no machine you have access to running OSX, right?



    sorry, bit rusty on the OS9 stuff, been a while since i used it. i'll ask around though, a lot of folks here still use it.

    As I post this, Comcast is digging up the street in front of my house to lay the fiber-optic cable that will enable it to provide cable Internet access in my 'hood. (Right now I'm on Earthlink/Verizon DSL.) So I'm not yet in a position to comment on your problem. Sorry. I assume you re-enabled DHCP via Ethernet upon your return home, right?

    I tried to get my Linux boot to connect too. But I hadn't tried it before the trouble so ... ?



    OS X on a 266 iMac? <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[oyvey]" />



    But my new PowerBook just showed up I'm out of town right now but I'll try it when I get back.
