That's true, however the only reason it could go out during the downtime is the fact that you obtain it through the MAS.
Really, I don't think that can be called the case. Software Update has simply been integrated into the application. It's not the same operations to update non-App Store applications as it is otherwise.

Well, Apple _did_ tell a judge that it takes them "two weeks" just to change a few lines of text on a website.
One can only imagine how long it takes them to actually change some code.

"Two weeks!" is of course the standard programmer answer to every time related question. I think Apple used it back then as kind of an inside joke.
