Office X keeps asking for personal details

Hi,

I have office X installed on a G4 with OS X 10.2.3. I only installed the Word and Excel components. the first time I ran them it asked me for my details and cd keys. it then ran fine for a while. yesterday some of my icons changed and so I booted from my jagwire disk and used disk utility to fix permissions. now, every time i launch word or excel it always comes up with the same screen asking for my details and cd key before allowng me into the app.

does anyone have any ideas as to how to fix this?

Delete the folder 'Microsoft Userdata' in ~/Documents/ and try again. (~ = home folder)

    Hi Defiant,

I've just tried what u suggested. I then launched word - no probs. however, every time I launch Excel it keeps asking me for my details and cd key. Its driving me crazy! do I have to reinstall it all just cos I went and fixed permissions?

no, we can move this further.

    delete this folder:

    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/

    that's gonna fix it.

I'm kinda getting a bit frustrated now!

    Hi Spooky,

if you quit all apps from M$, and delete those two folders again plus all files which begin with 'com.microsoft.' in this folder: ~/Library/Preferences/ and try it again ? One of those files is also called 'com.microsoft.Excel'..hehe

    Hi Defiant,

same probs!! the files you mentioned about deleting exist both in my home area and also on the hard drive (root?). should I try to delete both sets?

    thanx

    Hi defiant,

did as you sugested. Same probs!! the problem looks like excel as word functions fine. I did find a bizarre prob though. when I chose find from the finder and typed in "Excel", it wouldn't find any files at all! even though I can see an app called Excel in the apps folder! is there something seriously wrong with my OS? I had to open every folder on the machine one by one to hunt for files.

    hi spooky,

be careful when searching for files trough the finder window. if you enter your search in a window, it only searches the content of the window an it's sub-folders.

when you're in the finder, press Apple-F (command + F) and enter your search there.

I'm sorry that we still haven't found out what's causing you problems.. <img src="embarrassed.gif" border="0">

    Hi defiant,

with regards to searching, that's exactly what I did - Cmd-F. I asked to search everywhere and typed in Excel. yet Find can't seem to locate any instance of the word "Excel" on my HD even though I might have a window open where I can see the application icon for it. what is even more wird is that if I open the office x folder and type "Excel" into the search field, it still tells me there are no matches!!

Excel seems to be invisible to the OS!

definitely strange. let's go the 'reinstall office x' route, shall we ?

first, delete the folder 'microsoft office x' in your applications folder. then, delete all the preferences we talked about earlier. then, reinstall office x and pray.

    I'm a little bit clueless.

    Hi defiant,

I'll try that out later when I get back home. I'm away for a week but when I get back I'll let you know if it worked.

    thanx for all the help
