Is my monitor broken on my iMac DV?

I'm currently writing to you on an external VGA attached to my iMac DV 400. This afteroon when I turned it on no screen image came up. Everything else seems to work fine; modem, internal speakers, etc, but nothing on the monitor!

I had some screen isssues when I first installed OSX but fixed them with the firmware update. Is there any software fix to my problem or am I stuck taking it in to my local AASC? I'm really sad!! At least it works on external VGA but this monitor's quality is atrocious!

Thanks!

Joe Dangerous.

Well looks like resetting the PRAM worked for me. Thanks anyway!

That happened to me on my old iMac, and I was advised it was likely to be my logic board that had gone. It was goignto cost AUD$1000 to fix (about $600 US) so I went and bought a flat panel iMac.

Still, one month out of warranty, it turned into a very expensive external hard drive.

    I hope your problem isnt as serious! <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Well its now been several hours and a couple of restarts, and everything is working fine. As soon as I zapped my PRAM, the screen came on A-OK. Still, I have no idea what happened, or why the PRAM would affect this.

    Dangrous. Joe Dangerous.

PRAM stores some info about your (primary) monitor which helps the hardware to initialize it. It can go bad just like anything else depending on what error occurs. When PRAM goes bad, it is Open Firmware, I guess, that fails in a number of ways.
