A hash is a transformation of a string to unreadable characters. Basically its cryptography.
Example:
I just recently finished a website for a client where his customers would login and create accounts. I didn't want to store the passwords in clear text so I wrote a quick hashing function that would scramble the users password in the database. That way if anyone were to look inside the database, they'd see nonsensical characters instead of the real passwords.
