Best Buy back with iPhone trade-in deal, $200 off iPhone 5 over weekend

With Apple's next iPhone expected to be right around the corner, Best Buy is bringing back its iPhone trade-in program for this weekend for discounts on the current flagship model, giving customers the opportunity to save at least $100 off the purchase of an iPhone 5.

Customers bringing in a working iPhone 4 will receive at least a $100 Best Buy gift card good toward the purchase of an iPhone 5 with a two-year agreement. Those bringing in an iPhone 4S will see their trade-in worth at least $200 toward the purchase of an iPhone 5.

The trade-in program isn't valid with T-Mobile and no-contract iPhone models, and trade-in value may vary depending on the condition of a device. The deal requires the activation of a new two-year contract with Verizon, AT&T or Sprint, and customers must be upgrade-eligible with their current providers.

Devices with cracked screens or water damage aren't eligible for the program, though Best Buy says on the program page that stores "would be happy to recycle" phones for free.

The deal runs from Thursday through Sunday, August 18. It is available only to in-store customers.

Best Buy has been running its trade-in program in limited bursts for some time now. The most recent occurrences were in May and then in June of this year. The retailer also recently offered trade-in cash for iPads.

For those looking to trade in their iPhone, iPad or MacBook toward an item other than an iPhone 5, or perhaps seeking cash to save toward Apple's anticipated "iPhone 5S," the AppleInsider Trade-In Guide is also available with special offers from leading trade-in partners such as Gazelle (pays cash), Amazon (Amazon Gift Cards), andNextWorth (cash).

Wow. That's almost half of what those phones are worth on eBay or Craigslist.

Anybody who would buy an iPhone 5 now is clueless. Same for any "on sale" Mac with last year's specs.

I'd disagree on the iPhone 5, the usual policy has been to only offer the supplanted phone model with less memory: so by purchasing a 64GB 5 now at a discount they get the lowered price but the advantages (were they needed) of the greater memory.

Good luck getting my 32GB iPhone 4S. I have a grandfathered unlimited plan from Verizon and my 4S is the last of the "Steve Jobs iPhones" (your thumb should be able to touch any part of the screen without moving you hand).

Such a garbage deal when you can get 200 for an iPhone 4 on eBay easily. You have to be beyond lazy to agree to a ripoff of this level.

It can be a pain selling phones on ebay/Craigslist.  Selling fees, labor to take pictures, and talking/emailing stupid people.

Labor? It takes maybe ten minutes to snap some photos and fill out a quick description. Do the math on how much you're getting paid for those ten minutes if the phone sells for double what best buy is offering. What are your ten minutes worth?

It such a crappy deal my 4s should worth more than $200, better than an iPod touch and still have to sign 2 year contract?. Doesn't match the math! And it's true that beyond lazy if you could not list it on eBay to get $300-$350 crispy cash not a gift card braw! Then just add $300 you are in business to get a brand new iPhone 5!

What does your plan have to do with your iPhone being a 4S?

Its a Verizon thing.  Basically, if you want an upgrade they kick you off the unlimited plan and onto the shared everything group plan.  bastards. AT&T does not have this requirement and you can stay on your current plan.  If the OP wants to keep their unlimited plan the OP and get a newer phone, they will need to get the phone unsubsidized without a starting a new contract.
