Supposed 'iPad 5' casing and digitizer compared with 4th-gen model in video

A new video uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday combines two parts purportedly bound for Apple's next-generation iPad, the front digitizer and rear casing, and compares the dummy model with the current version of the tablet.

iPad 5 Comparison

While the supposed "iPad 5" parts appear to be identical to those already been seen in multiple "leaks," Tuesday's video offers a better look at how the rumored device's iPad mini-like design stacks up against the fourth-generation iPad.

As seen previously, one of the most significant changes are the side bezels, which are substantially thinner than the current full-size iPad. In the clip, Lewis Hilsenteger of YouTube channel Unbox Therapy lays a white version of the purported iPad 5 digitizer on top of a current iPad, illustrating the greatly reduced bezel size.

With the current iPad, the bezel width is nearly uniform on all four sides, but Apple's latest tablet, the iPad mini, sports a sleeker profile that cuts down on these "handles." The result makes the full size iPad seem taller when used in the portrait orientation.

The purported rear aluminum shell is also redesigned and cuts down on width by about 1.5 centimeters, while depth is nearly the same. Rounded edges terminating in a sharp chamfered screen surround replace the tapered design of the fourth-gen iPad.

Not much can be gleaned from the video concerning internals, as there are none to speak of, though the shell does have dual loudspeaker ports, suggesting the next-gen unit will adopt the iPad mini's stereo design.

Apple is not expected to announce a new iPad or iPad mini at its upcoming special event on Sept. 10, at which a next-gen iPhone, possbile low-cost handset, and iOS 7 are thought to be unveiled.

Does any consumer care about Apple's iPad anymore? All the pundits say consumers are more interested in buying a cheap plastic Android tablets that are just as good as an iPad and cost almost $150 less than Apple's iPad. Wall Street seems to think most consumers prefer plastic over metal cases. So far it appears the generic $200 Android tablet is getting all the tablet market share as Apple continues to lose tablet market share in huge chunks. I've heard most of the Android market share numbers are based on shipments, not actual sales, but the way the news media looks at it, those cheap Android tablets are the ones ending up in everyone's hands. Google is still bragging about millions of Android activations a day, so there has to be consumers buying Android devices in high numbers. A thinner bezel seems to be no match for a $150 cheaper Android tablet. I wonder if Apple is also going to have to go to a plastic iPad for increased tablet sales in China.

"Just as good" is subjective. There are plenty of things to value other than price. Considering how much use I get from my iPad, I consider $150 an extremely small cost for a premium look and feel, a higher quality display, larger battery capacity and a curated App Store that means I never have to worry about malware.

A race to the bottom on price doesn't really benefit consumers in the long run. Healthy profit margins encourage manufacturers and developers to add value. If there is no profit to be made there is no incentive to add value.

It's a similar false economy to that of businesses who purchase multifunction printers based solely on cost per page, without considering most of the expense is in the lucrative service contracts that give manufacturers with little incentive to build quality.

In a couple of weeks, I'll be headed to Europe to visit family and some R&R. I will probably give my 3rd gen. iPad to mom. Hope Apple doesn't take too long in announcing this beauty. Wonder how long I'll be without one?

If they don't announce it September, then I don't see it happening until after the holidays... More like q1 of 2014.

    <---- Apple fanboy

The iPad in my opinion is still an unrivaled tablet experience. Other company's can have fun basking in the end trails of the total package that defines a Apple product. Just days from now even more spectacular examples of collective genius will be unleashed. I just hope I can contain myself a little longer. When the iPad 5 is finally due to go on sale ill be cued in a strait jacket to keep from streaking while poring apple sauce over my steaming hide. This device has changed my life in ways I will never be able to describe with words alone. The best for now is to hand rave like it's 1998 in the hope that others might understand my cryptic sign language and join us in the biggest fan club in history.

Assuming the majority of iPad owners are adult males this is a long awaited improvement.

Horrible video.  That guy sounds like he's doing a bad imitation of a sports jock.

It's also similar to a sports announcement in that they take literally five seconds of material and spin it out into five minutes.

Give it to a pretty girl to hold next time douchebag.  You are adding nothing to the proceedings.

Thinner side bezels? Is that good? I already have trouble keeping my thumb off the screen on the side; my thumb gets cramped after a while if I'm holding the iPad up, and it has always felt like it would be more comfortable to have a wider bezel for more space to move my thumb(s) around.

Would those same pundits say that a Kia or a Hyundai are just as good as a BMW or Mercedes?  Sure those cheaper cars sell far more, but the driving experience and quality/longevity of the components isn't even comparable.  You get what you pay for.

Yeah, not everyone can afford a BMW or Mercedes, and Apple doesn't care about the low end consumers either.  There is no profit there.

Me too, so this new one will be very convenient, a perfect fit one might say.

My wants? A bigger iPad (and thinner too of course - and lighter and...) and full compatibility between iOS and OS X versions of Pages. Oh... and a front end under iOS to Mathematica on OS X. Thank you and good night.
