If a fingerprint sensor appeared in a movie from 40 years ago, it's prior art. Therefore, Samsung wins.
way oversimplified. yes, as to the concept of fingerprint scanning for security, which is clearly in the public realm. no as to the specific technology used.

I think it's an anti-theft attachment. The hands-on videos sure make it look that way.
WOW, that's idiotic, then. They've completely ruined the experience of wearing the device for thousands (which turns into millions by report and word of mouth), and by the time they correct the misconception, no one will give a frick.

Rhetorical use of the question mark. The Gear does NOT work with the S4 (and that's odd) and it's a huge puzzler why the flagship device wouldn't be paired right out of the gate with the new gadget.

That's attributed to the current S3 and S4 (except for the S4 Google Edition) not having native OS support for Bluetooth LE which the Samsung smartwatch uses. Because of that Samsung is being uncharacteristically quick to announce they'll be updating both of those devices to Jelly Bean 4.3 in the next few weeks, an Android version that does bake it in.
Obviously the OEM's can move faster on OS updates when they're motivated.

IDEX has previously announced that through a legal process in 2007, IDEX was granted a license to certain key patents at that time owned by the fingerprint sensor company UPEK Inc. The patent rights of UPEK have later been assigned to AuthenTec Inc. which was acquired by Apple Inc. last year.
Apple and AuthenTec have now verified IDEX’s Licensing Agreement, through a notice of so-called “recordal” of the license to key patents in the field of fingerprint sensing. The License Agreement has been recorded by the United States Patent and Trademark Office sanctioning that IDEX maintain its licensed rights to important, early patents for fingerprint sensors.
IDEX holds key early fundamental patents within the fingerprint sensor industry which places IDEX in an influential position to exploit the mass market potential of this technology for secure ID. IDEX has, since 1997, been a pioneering company in the field of capacitive fingerprint sensing technology, and owns and controls the earliest, basic patents for low cost fingerprint sensors. This license reinforces the Company’s leading patent position, which in our assessment is the strongest IP portfolio in the fingerprint sensor industry besides Apple/AuthenTec.

Im thinking he meant that the Watch only works as a companion with the Note 3. Wont work with the S4 as a companion.

Android's open-ness means that OEMs have the right to install proprietary apps and interfaces on Android...
Of course, it would be nice if Samsung made some of their apps available on the Play store...
