iPhone 5c default wallpapers will match external shell colors

Seemingly going the extra mile to celebrate its colorful new array of lower-cost iPhones, Apple will ship the iPhone 5c with a default wallpaper that matches the color of each unit.

The new iPhone 5c, which features a seamless polycarbonate shell available in green, blue, red, yellow, and white, will ship to customers, carriers, and Apple Stores with default wallpapers and translucency hues to match the color of its exterior casing.

In both its keynote presentation and the marketing materials for the device, Apple is pushing the different color options for the 5c as a major selling point. To supplement "the most colorful iPhone yet," Apple has also come out with a range of cases in the same color options as the 5c, but the company clearly intends for users to mix and match them for novel color combinations.

Despite the clever customization, buyers of the new iPhone may want to experiment with their backgrounds at some point. The iOS 7 operating system the 5c runs was designed to create a sense of space, with a parallax feature built in that makes the Jony Ive-designed flat iconography appear to be in motion when the device is tilted.

The iPhone 5c will launch on September 20 starting at $99 for an on-contract 16GB model. A higher-end model, 32GB model will be available for $199 on subsidy, while an off-contract, unlocked version will retail for $549. The 5c will be available for pre-order starting September 13.

Meh! A lower price would have made each of those colors a lot more attractive... Not sure where Apple is going with this phone, because sure as heck it does not seem to be targeted at poorer people all over the world, including the US...

Funny how rumor has been taken as fact, huh. "Everyone" "knew" that the iPhone 5C was going to be a cheaper alternative…

$550 is too much for the 5C.

So, the 5C is $550 and the 5S is $650? I thought that the whole purpose behind the 5C was to be cheaper and more affordable for poor people. There is hardly any difference between the price of the 5C and the 5S. So, what's the point?

The more I think about it, the more the 5C is an Apple fail. And this comes from and Apple fan knee-deep in Apple's ecosystem.

I figured the price would be 400 max- I even considered buying a green one off contract until I saw 550 price. I'll stick with my HP Pre3 thank you.

Think just a touch harder, then. Take the original condition as a baseline. Theoretically, we would have received the black and white 4S free, black and white 5 at $99, and black and white 5S at $199.

Instead we got the black and white 4S free, white, blue, yellow, pink, and green 5, with better camera, telephony, and battery at $99, and black, white, and gold 5S at $199.

It's an expansion on the baseline more than it is a total product line upheaval. Think of it like that.

And this comes from and Apple fan knee-deep in Apple's ecosystem.

Doesn't matter. How much of an Apple fan am I, and I'm constantly wrong about what idiotic things Apple would be doing, yeah? Whether you're a fan or not, you can be utterly incorrect about any manner of crap; you don't need to qualify it with a statement thereof.

If you've a reason to doubt Apple, either in rumor or in fact, state it and explain why, fearlessly, and thoroughly. Simple statements like "[product name] sucks" or "Apple was wrong to [action]" shouldn't be expected to stand unquestioned. But if you explain why you think what you think, you can be contradicted or–in some cases eventually–shown wrong.

I agree with everyone. The price is a major missed opportunity from Apple.

This will be popular in the US. But overseas for prepaid markets? I doubt it.

Impressive that they were able to do this without mention or mock of product in any sense. Though I still like this one more: Majority Of Americans Approve Of Sending Congress To Syria <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

    Increase Apple's margins...

For an investor this is good news. For consumers we're getting less of a bargain than we would normally get from Apple. I'm sure the profit margin on the 5C will be greater than the 4Ss was last year.

In fact, it isn't too much. It is the same iPhone 5, which until today costs $649 but now at $100 less, because it isn't in a premium enclosure. The new enclosure isn't cheap neither, I expect it to be very popular handling drops that otherwise could create very ugly dings in a 5/5S. I think it could be one of the most resistant smartphones out there.

And I want the yellow one NOW!

You are an Apple fan that doesn't understand Apple at all.

Want to see your face in the Q1 '14 when the 5C will be sold at record highs.

It's a very hot hit just now.

Does some have a Samsung Copy Counter website in which we count how long it takes for them to copy Apple?

Thus, How long until Samsung's next phone has shell color-matching wallpaper.

OK, if Apple would have kept the 5, and lowered the price by $100, they would not have spent all that money developing a new phone, and that's profit, while keeping a better built metal phone.

Otherwise, why assume Apple should keep doing things as in the past? Why should they not product a more mass-appeal (pricewise) phone, instead of just doing what they've been doing?

    Anyway, appreciate the patronizing lecture!
