I can't understand why people are expecting a substantial feature upgrade when it is almost always readily apparent since iPhone 3GS that the S versions of the iPhone are always a refinement, improvement, adding a so-called "polish" to the the iteration of the iPhone prior to it.
So to me this is a totally expected upgrade. I did not look forward to a mind blowing experience, and it seems I guessed right.
But on the other hand, that Infinity Blade III demo sure looked sweet and mind blowing! Having played Infinity Blade I & II on my iPhone 4, this is by leaps & bounds a huge improvement to my game playing experience.

In my opinion, S means Security, hence the Touch ID feature. But then again Apple never defines what those suffixes mean, so it is totally open to interpretations.
But yeah, you're right, surprising that 802.11ac is not included with iPhone 5S. Probably something to do with the battery not being able to cope with it maybe. With the MacBook Air I think they got away with having larger batteries, but I'm sure incorporating larger batteries into the iPhone 5S will make the 5S larger than its predecessor. So they postponed that to iPhone 6, probably.

.....The selection and performance by Elvis Costello, was an AWFUL statement by Apple. Would of been much better to just end the podcast than to waste 5-10 minutes of an artist that even this ole fart did not like in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 2013.

The person that made this decision to have Elvis Costello perform at today's keynote should be trashed.
I didn't watch the whole video (I skipped the parts about new Apple stores and others boring PR bits) but did anyone else notice how subdued the audience was? Very little applause and it was not very enthusiastic. The Apple team on stage also just didn't appear to me at least to be that excited either. The tension and discomfort was almost palpable. Contrast that with the WWDC event and you will quickly see what I mean.
I really feel like Apple missed a great chance today. The prices needed to be at least $100 less on the 5C, and they also could have doubled the memory to 32/64/128. It was also a great chance to kill the 3.5" and old 30pin for good. Why not just offer a 8G version of the 5C for $100 less off contract or free on contract. That one stumped me.
Although some will disagree, until Apple releases a larger display or completely changes the case people will view these type of upgrades as very minor and nothing to get excited about. Fingerprint scanners and 64 bit just won't cut it.
People worried the 5C would cannibalize sales from the 5S but it looks like it is the other way around. Pay $100 more and get a much nicer phone with far more improvements. $549 off contact for the 5C seems far too expensive. I thought $449 to $499 was a little expensive but still cheap enough to really grow market share.

Journalists don't give a frick about "64-bit" or "LTE". Not even the number of carriers supporting the iPhone worldwide. And when we're told that it takes two man hours to convert a 3D game from 32-bit to 64-bit, they don't have a clue what that means.
But the eyes of developers around the world were bugging out when that was said. Jaws dropped and heads shook in disbelief. That's why you always see better reactions at WWDC.

Edit: Or according to TS, there's no danger of enthusiasm, but I maintain there is still a danger of catching some writer looking stupid in a live broacast.

Why would Apple want to lose control of the presentation without editing it if something goes wrong, i.e., Power outage, Broadband disruption, Protesters in the crowd. Things as simple as this could hurt Apple shares and reputation. Videos go viral but blogs have to be read to know what happens.

I am sorry, I can not remember any Keynote Event streamed live (Video) before. It has, in my recollection, always been a "Live Blog" - I could be wrong. If I were running Apple, I would not want video of "Mis-Haps" out there to be used against me (i.e. , Samsung, HTC Commercials)

The reason they do not stream it live is to make sure nothing goes public before the end. Remember the "Bill Gates Blue Screen of Death" situation?
