Getting songs off the iPod

Posted:
in iPod + iTunes + AppleTV edited January 2014
Ok, this weekend my cousin let me borrow his iPod. i had a ton of songs that he wanted so he let me use it for a day in exchange for a few gigs of music.

in any case, in the process i'd entered in a lot of tags for the songs to give them title, album, artist etc. before i copied them over. for reasons i won't get into here i'd copied them from a location then deleted the ones where i'd put in all the id3 tag info. when he got it, he wanted to have the versions where i had all that info on it, just in case something happened to his iPod.

(he'd actually completely crashed it and lost all the music on it using the PC program xPlay, so was a little nervous)

anyway, it's a pain in the *** trying to get them off there. i found a way to do them one at a time, but i'd like to just be able to take them all off at once. anyone know of a program that makes the files visible again so that i could copy off multiple files at once?

I got some software called escapePod that's supposed to let you see all the hidden files (ie songs) on the iPod.

has anyone here actually been able to copy mass quantities of files off their iPods? i think i found a program that will do it. i'll give it a shot and get back to you all.

bought an iPod off e-bay for $400. if it shows up, that will be a great price for the 10GB version.

i just would have thought that others here would be more interested in pulling files off the iPod.

i was surprised to not see a thread on the subject anywhere.

As I posted elsewhere. <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/php/dlpage.php?id=12942&kind=0&db=mac"; target="_blank">Escape Pod</a> allows you to get all of the music off of the ipod. Very sweet program. I have used it a couple of times and it has worked flawlessly.

I found a way that a little slow, but fairly easy. It does require OSX though. I just got the iPod and this was the first thing i did with it. I tested this after loading my iPod with songs from my Sawtooth. I copied my songs onto my mom's TiBook.

Type the following in the Terminal:

    cd /Volumes/(name of your iPod)/iPod_Control/Music

then type 'ls' to see that there are some folders, at least in my case they are labled F00,F01,F02 . . . . .F19

    now type:

    open F00

a finder window should open up containing some of your songs. You can simply drag them to the hard drive now. Then do the same for F01 etc.

I'm sure it's easier with a program, but more fun to do it yourself!

There is an easier way to do this without using the terminal. Just select Go To Folder from the Go menu in the finder, and then type in the path to the iPod [ /Volumes/(name of your iPod)/iPod_Control/Music ] A Finder window will show up with the folders in it.

What are you talking about? iPod is a HD, so you can move files to and from it. Why would you need a program to that with? <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

    the music is hidden

I think if you name the computer the same as your main system and use the same user name it'll work right in iTunes. it does that for me and my powermac G4 and Powerbook g4

Thanks for all the tips guys. Used escape pod the other day and it worked like a charm, will have to try those other methods.

Turns out I got ripped off on the iPod off eBay, but got my money back. Now I'll just have to wait a while before I'm ready to buy another one. Think I'll wait until after MWNY just to be on the safe side.
