Windows iPods, selling??

in iPod + iTunes + AppleTV edited January 2014
I have heard absolutely nothing about the new windows version of the iPod. Does anyone know if it is selling well? Are there any Windows users out there who have got one?

I think it would be interesting to discuss the reaction to this product on the other side. This thread could also discuss the future possibility of a x86 release of OS X or other window releases of Apple software. Remember Apple is now fighting back!! In time.

Apple is working on not just winning a battle, but winning a war.

I really doubt there's a hardware difference other than the fact that you get an additional cable with the Windows iPod, heh.

Any difference will be firmware and we're all pretty unclear on the interoperability between a Windows iPod and a Macintosh.

We know the Mac iPod will work with MediaFour's XPlay. If the Windows iPod doesn't sync with iTunes, then someone should be able to make an OSXPlay or something.

XPlay looks a bit better than MusicMatch, but it also costs money.

I believe the drive in the Windows version is not HFS+ format as is the Mac version (thus allowing one to use it as an external hard drive). Not sure what format exactly. FAT? FAT32?

There is not yet a means to format the drive from one format to the other... that I know of.

So if you have a mac version you can't hook in up to a PC. Now that kinda sucks. What if a friend has a PC and you want to share music with him. In time.

Say hello to XPlay or EphPod + MacDrive.

I have to say, that I think it was a great mistake for Apple not to include a USB port (either USB 1, or 2) on the windows version. I am a proud Mac user so firewire meets my needs, but these windows ones would really fly off the shelves if they had USB. Perhaps it was just too much of a re-engineering feat, and I am sure Apple did a cost-benefit analysis on the issue. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

usb is hella slow. imagine transferring 18.7GB over USB. i'd piss myself.

a guy in my office came by on monday and asked me to install a firewire card in his computer (i'm in the IT dept, so these kinds of requests do come to me once in a while). and as we're walking back to his cube he explains that he just got himself a 20 giger ipod. i of course share with him the fact that i just got one too. he then proceeds to ask me all kinds of questions about apple and computers, and the MacOS. "Does it really never crash? How fast are macs? Can they do [this or that]? ..." he really liked the soho apple store. so, i think i got a convert. looks like +1 for the apple, -1 for ms. (now, only several million to go)

Very cool!! If we each convert one person, Apple doubles it's market share! As for the USB, I agree it would suck ass, but it would still let more people use it, all be it more slowly. The only time it would be really painfull, is when you first dump all you mp3's onto it, going forward it would be ok. It is not a sexy solution, but seeing just how many PC's are shipping now with USB 2.0 it would have made sense.

Another way to go, would have been to offer it bundled with a Firewire card, (either PCI or PC Card) This would create the same "seamlessness" for windows users. It would be an "iPod certified firewire card, and would just make the whole experience cleaner for windows users.

Putting a USB port on an iPod is like adding a floppy disc drive to the iMac..... no way. One of the selling points of the iPod is the Firewire speed of downloading.

Don't forget that FW adoption is important to Apple. It's going up against USB 2 and including that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Make people get firewire cards to use the iPod. They're only like $30.
