I mean, really, how has that worked out for him.

Isn't that the reason he is saying goodbye.

Apple, Ballmer said, is about being "fashionable,"

And this is exactly why this is his last meeting..  After more than a decade, he still truly does not get it.

Microsoft is "about doing more... mistakes!", I would add.

    He sounds mentally ill.

MS has a big role to play in the future of computing? That's what is unbelievable.

In phones and tablets Apple is a higher volume player than MS. Too bad Ballmer couldn't inject any realities in his speech. It was all "were doing great and our competitors suck."

So %u2026 He's saying Microsoft stands for "being unfashionable, expensive* and knowing less%u2026"

Good heavens, I never thought I'd agree with Monkey Boy!

*The 'expensive' isn't about the cheap crappy PCs but the enormous waste of time and money keeping the crap running.

I'll miss monkey boy. His reign benefitted Apple immensely

It's true, MS will show other companies what NOT to do.

How has it worked for out for him? Let's think about that ... Tell me you wouldn't trade places with him.

How has that worked out for him? In the context of my comment and in the context of the story. Not that well.

You can't really expect Ballmer to look at things rationally and admit the errors that were made under his administration. If he does that, then the whole time he ran MSFT he would have to see himself and his time there as a massive failure. As the marketing person he is, I don't think he could ever admit to that, except maybe in hindsight in 20 years or so(it took Sculley quite a few years to figure out what had happened at Apple). By blaming the other companies, he allows himself to be off the hook for the problems MSFT is facing now. It wasn't his fault. It was the other guy's fault officer. Looking at things right now, history will not be kind to Mr. Ballmer.

But at least Ballmer is consistent. Total lack of class from beginning to end. Not surprising at all.

Yes, there is truth to what he is saying. Apple makes products that people actually want to buy. Microsoft, on the other hand, makes products that next to no one wants to buy (Zune, Zune RT, KIN, etc.) or products that people are forced to use because of business decisions (Microsoft Office). Instead of belittling and mocking Apple, he should be working to push products that consumers actually want. And, no, being able to run Microsoft Office is not a feature that drives sales to consumers. Also, you don't see Apple have to offer gift card trade-ins for other people's products to drive sales like Microsoft is forced into doing. So other than more petty insults I don't see much intellectual depth behind the statement.

I think this means they will help gates run the second largest land fill company in the US.

This is why you are no longer CEO, Mr Balmer.  You still refuse to admit that other companies are doing things better than Microsoft.  If you can't admit when someone else gets something right then you're never going to be able to come up with something better.

Out with the more and in with the better!

God, this guy is seriously delusional - so much so, he's actually funny sometimes.

Indeed!  He reminds me of "Comical Ali", the Iraqi Information Minister that provided hilarious propaganda broadcasts about the Iraqi Army's imminent and glorious victory, even while the country & city were crumbling around him.

Focus on Microsoft, their strengths, and what they can do. No need to call out the 2-3 companies kicking your ass. It (1) proves that they are beating you, otherwise you wouldn't call them out, and (2) shows you fear them and have no other defensive move, such as --> stating what makes you different and the best choice.

Same thing for the most recent Windows Phone commercial. The LONE couple, all the way in the back, in folding chairs, while dozens of iOS and Android users duke it out, standing in front of you. You barely show your product, but do show a ton of iPhone 5s and Galaxy phones.

But two apps at once! Microsoft Office on your tablet! Being able to zoom in on the home screen!!! Clickety-clacking your keyboard to your tablet while you dance like a buffoon! Come on man, these are killer features!!!
