Seems strange to me for a company to hold special meeting to view the same box they have been seeing for the last 8 months or so. The only difference is that its running 133 MHz faster. What's the big deal?

If they were G5's they'd be calling the press and holding a special event for sure. That kind of jump warrants it.
Too bad we're most likely only going to get 1Ghz dual machines. The single CPUs will be less than 1Ghz, most likely 867 on the low end and 966 on the mid-range unit.
Of course, extra speed is nice but geez I'd love for Apple to be closer to 2Ghz right now. We're the laughing stock of the industry.
The G4 IS a failed chip. Absolute junk. When it came out IT (7400) was the chip that was supposed to make the Mhz gap disappear. Instead it turned into a GHz gap! Now I know the G4 is quite the little performer Mhz for Mhz, but I want to be at least in the realm of PC frequencies. Then the G4e (7450) was supposed to scale like crazy. Now we're all betting on Apollo. Screw it, if Motorola can't get the G4 moving then bring on the G5. I don't think they could possible screw it up more if they tried.
Why would Apple announce a press event and give away the G5 release date? maybe Apple will just unveil it and post a streaming video of its intro at Apple.com on a certain date?
Apple has delayed the release of new Power Macs, which it had been expected to release yesterday.
Sources confirmed to MacUser last week that Apple has lined up a range of speed-bumped Power Macs, including the first to use a 1GHz PowerPC processor. As we reported, Apple had originally set aside the provisional date of yesterday, 22 January, for the release of these machines, but we learned late last night that factors had conspired against this plan, and forced Apple to delay any announcement.
A principal reason that may have contributed to the decision is the number of existing Power Macs that remain in the channel. US sources report that these are continuing to sell well, despite anticipation of new models. However UK delears have revealed that they are having difficulty getting any stock of Power Macs at all at present.
Owing to the last-minute date change, Apple is still sitting on the new models, and sources indicate an announcement will now not come until next week at the earliest.Apple has delayed the release of new Power Macs, for reasons best known to itself.

As far as I can remember, they were keeping pace with Intel MHz speeds until the G4 premiered -- you know, 15 months (or whatever) without a speed boost while Intel keeps moving.

Jobs DOES think 1 GHz is a big deal. I read somewhere that Jobs said Apple will be having a "GHz coming out party" for Apple employees this spring, when Powermacs finally break 1 GHz. Originally I thought it was because all Macs would hit or break 1 GHz, and the G5s would blow past it. But now it's starting to look like the party will be over the Powermacs G4s just bumping the 1 GHz mark. I bet gauge pro would indicate that the 1 GHz Powermac was really running at 999.8 MHz, so Apple wouldn't even technically be at 1 GHz yet!!!!
