Mac OS 9.2.2 Update to support Gigawire?

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
I was just reading ThinkSecret, and I noticed that they mentioned that it has improved FireWire support.

Do you think this means that we can see Gigawire in PowerMacs this January?

    If you look at the SM's (service marks) Gigawire seems to have little or nothing to do with Firewire...

    So with that being said.... (my post above) Does anyone care to speculate on what Gigawire is? The text (for gw) sure has me interested...

    SM (service mark) or TM (trade mark) isn't the same as a patent. A patent is used for a new invention (such as IEE1394 or 802.11b) A sm or tm is used for a brand name or catch phrase such as 'Firewire' or 'Airport' or 'Just do it' or 'Have it your way' etc...

    We all know:

    IEE1394 = Firewire

    802.11b = Airport

    What we need to know:

    ?????? = Gigawire

    Now based on the text for GW it would seem to be a brand name for some type of wireless communication. I would rule out the next gen 802.11 stuff (802.11a or 802.11g) since AFAIK you can't do cellular telephone and fax stuff over it (if I'm wrong please let me know).

    From reading the text it seems to be talking about some form of cell phone service but I've yet to see any Apple product make use of cell service. My best guess is Gigawire could be used when 3G (or whatever) broadband wireless services become real... Just a guess but it seems to fit.

    Maybe GigaWire is an optical transfer method developed by Apple in secret.

    Capable of transferring 1 Gigabit per second. Or Gigabyte, for that matter.

    maybe they plan on calling Gigabit Ethernet Gigawire <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

    Ahh, I didn't actually read the details of trademark, I just heard of it and thought it was to do with the next generation FireWire.

    I think it's a Wireless communication spec for digital hub devices and that Apple wants all PCs to have it. It will enable everyone's iPod to communicate to their home PC (assuming it's in range).

    Also the iPod 2's functionality could be extended, wireless almost constant syncronisation with base PC (using Gigawire), full colour LCD, can play movies and view images. Also a few more built in arcade games .

    It that's the case then how does "Telecommunication services; cellular telephone communication;" fit? Cell phones that establish their connection via an optical method? I can't see how that would work.

    Infact "cellular telephone communication" is by its very nature 'WIRELESS' and I can't see how gigaWIRE would make any sense... gigawireLESS would seem to be a better name if cellular was really part of the mix.

    Then again it could be Y-E-A-R-S before GIGAWIRE becomes a realized product since FIREWIRE first hit the SM/TM database many years before the first FIREWIRE device was made available.

    Ahhh yes! That's the kind of stuff I wanna read about. Could it be that Apple has found Airport too power hungry for small devices (just a guess - but I'll research it) and designed a 'new' (non-802.11) way to network devices that has better/lower power usage while at the same time provide better speed and distance? Now THAT would really be something.

    Heck even if Apple wasn't the one who did it but is just working closely with those who did it would still be cool...

    OK this is it...

    Ever hear the rumor about Apple creating its own messaging service?

    what if gigawire was it?

    communication of cell phones, email, fax and computers transfering messages and images. sounds like a far out version of Aol instant messanger. The SM seems to mention "peripherals"... what if the rumored apple palm handheld mock thing were to use this gigawire service along with whatever other new digital devices apple should come out with? I like my idea i hope i'm right.

    Yes I do remember something about that... and then we have this...

    It seems Apple has been spending quite a bit of time working with other in getting the FCC to open more of the airwaves...

    Here are some quotes:

    "The absence of suitable spectrum resources for unlicensed wireless communications for educational and other uses led Apple to work with the Commission to develop such resources. Apple's 1991 "Data-PCS" Petition for Rulemaking defined the essential attributes of a pioneering unlicensed radio service and launched the effort that led to the FCC's recent decisions to allocate 30 MHz of spectrum for unlicensed voice and data services."

    "Apple also is involved in the FCC's proceeding to allocate spectrum above 40 GHz for a wide variety of uses, including a substantial band of frequencies for unlicensed operations"

    "In all of these efforts, Apple has focused on the distinct benefits that can be derived from various unlicensed wireless technologies. Apple now seeks to build upon the important steps recently taken by the Commission to preserve and advance unlicensed operation by proposing the creation of a new, unlicensed, high-capacity NII Band"

    Here is a link to the full text... Interesting reading to say the least..

    <a href="http://www.warpspeed.com/lovette1.html"; target="_blank">http://www.warpspeed.com/lovette1.html</a>;

    To date it would seem as if all of Apple's work in getting the FCC to relax things have gone totally unused... Maybe with that GIGAWIRE trademark things might soon change...

    **EDIT**

    Seems strange that nothing seems to have happened after this... Unless I just didn't find it yet... Still looking...

    communications, phones, peripherals...I pray this isn't something silly and overhyped like Bluetooth.
  • Reply 11 of 21
    About the bluetooth. i think that it could be really usefull. I think that yes it has been over hiped, but I think that it should be incorpirated, and would be very usefull when otherthings in the house / office etc, start to get chips installed. I think that the airport card, should also be a bluetooth chip. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

    Maybe it means... nuthin'.

    At least, for the time being.

    Conceivably, someone came up with a cool name (Gigawire), and a lawyer-type said, "Slap a copyright on that thing before somebody gets hurt!" Voila. Instant rumor fodder.

    Of course, that's no fun. I bet it's a way to wirelessly refuel the Ginger, er.., Segway scooter from a Powerbook G4. Firewire for the iPod, Gigawire for the Segway.

    Please draw a G5 inside it, print it in 1.000.000 copies and send them to Cupertino. Then we know what we will get in January.

    Or even better. Mail Steve 1.000.000 emails. Much faster. And while your ad it. Please erase one of the nines of the iPods price on the <a href="http://www.apple.com/store"; target="_blank">www.apple.com/store</a>

    Now that I'm finally in the market for a PDA I've learned something.

    I really miss the power the Newton had. Honestly, if they could make it color and smaller with an airport card I'd buy one right now. All the solutions I've looked at for this are way to high of a price for what you get (I think). It's been how many years now and they still don't have the ability the Newton had?

    Heck, I only played with the things for a few hours but please, someone, give me a small one!

    Here's my updated version, including side view:

    As for the nines on the iPod price, I'll work on that next.
