Why not Plastic Shell? It would make more sense in that it would outwardly designate the 'class' of device as the same as the iPhone 5c.
Granted, the savings aren't that great compared to not using fused champhored glass, but it would less expensive, and likely a savings on a par with dropping from 16 to 8GB.

All said, it's a supply chain rumor.   Reuters and Kuo may be using the same set of sources, and it's really just 2 reports of the same data, and therefore of course they would line up 'perfectly.'

    No just no.

This guy has been right a lot. People always want to doubt him though.

Either Reuters is full of it or Apple has a real problem.

Two likely main reasons: 1) scale, and 2) build quality. Apple builds a lot more, and Apple demands top quality components. The last Nexus was plagued with build quality issues as well as OS stability problems.

Again the same BS as the iPhone and Appleinsider is going to publish it all over again?

    - supply constraints (stock drops),
    - leaks (stock drops),
    - lack of interest from the public (stock drops),
    - interest rises (stock drops),
    - release of the device (stock drops),
    - bad jokes, Apple is dead, some analyst lose hope on Apple  (stock drops),
    - Awesome sales proving all previous stuff was a made up lie  (stock goes up 2 dollars),
    - Analysts analyse lines and amount of time for things to go out of stock ( (stock drops),
    - Apple gives amazing numers (stock goes up 2%),
    - Analysts are proving wrong, but still attack Apple's numbers  (stock drops),
    - Nothing happens....  (stock drops).
    - Carl Icahn eats (Stock goes up).

    repeat.

Here is the title of this article I saw before AppleInsider's title...

Apple's rumored iPad mini with Retina display could face severe supply constraints

Thank The Verge for summing it all up in the title!

So when Apple was having ALL the problems above for the iPhones, Apple was strengthening its logistics know-how to deliver 9 million-plus iPhones around the world. Upon announcing a massive achievement in sales, all the rumormangers turned even more antagonistic towards Apple. Since the number was so far beyond anything any competitor had ever or could do, the rumormangers had no company to turn to to promote their achievements above Apple.

Now the iPad is the target.

Message to Tim... It does not matter what great hardware and software and services Apple produces this Fall and throughout 2014. The haters are going to hate. So, please keep up the GREAT work! Your focus on steering your company will rule the future!!

Retina iPad mini would cut into big iPad pie more than noretina one so they may not be in hurry till February. Imagine you would buy for Christmas noretina one and in January they would come with retina one. A lot of people would be mad.

Jeff Bezos of Amazon was able to get the HD displays on their Kindle HDXs on time. Which CEO is going to get their HD panels late? Mr. Tim "Late Again" Cook. It figures. Google's share price is still climbing. Amazon's share price is still climbing like no tomorrow. Tim Cook gives Wall Street another reason to keep Apple's share price in the red for 2013.

It's getting almost impossible for Apple to give Wall Street any reasons to boost Apple's share price. From an OS that makes users vomit to supply constraints, it's always something getting screwed up at Apple. Tim Cook might as well take the blame because he's the CEO. Apple is sitting on a mountain of cash and can't figure out how to ramp up production quickly enough. It's not like Tim Cook didn't know Christmas was coming this year. There'll be no return of Apple's share price to $700 this year. It will be lucky to get to $500 with a stiff tailwind. Thanks, Tim. You left Apple shareholders holding an empty bag again.

Google, "We need 1 million displays."

    Supplier, "We can deliver."

Amazon, "We need 1 million displays."

Supplier, "We need 1 million displays."

Apple, "We need 10 million displays."

Supplier, We can't do that.  We can give you 5 million and a promise."

A few people in the world have a "motion sickness" problem.  Car manufactures do not make cars that do not move so that those people do not get sick.

Apple has no need to satisfy the wants and desires of Wall Street.  Their only concern, and rightly so, is to build the best product they can.  If people like what Apple builds then they can buy it if they can afford it.  If they can not afford it Apple does not need to reduce the price.  I can not afford a Rolls Royce so I only admire them.

But the drivel you post does make Appleinsider fun to read.

If this is true, it shows huge problems for Apple. Supply constraints have been a problem for Apple (iMac) in the past. If Apple with it's locked up vendors and billions of $ cash cannot get a working supply chain to build its products it has a serious problem. Can't make the product, people will buy crap products instead. Apple is best, but it's not better than nothing.

These 'delay' and 'supply' rumors happen with every iOS device launch. And never come to pass.

It's stock value games and analysts etc covering their butts. They have been pushing the idea of a retina mini for weeks and now they are getting nervous that they were wrong. But it's against their code of conduct to ever actually say they were wrong so they are setting up an explanation for why it might not happen in case it doesn't.

These folks don't have any info to back up anything. If there in no retina display it's because Apple never intended to do it this year. And yet Apple will still likely sell record millions on launch etc

Lower to 8gb who is this guy a joke. 16gb is far too low now! I'd say go plastic and lowest size should be 32gb! Dumb shister!

    You should know better...

The 9.7" retina iPad has a lower resolution (264dpi vs 324 for the iPhones and iPad mini), and the smaller 3.5" and 4" panels are much easier to produce (being small divides the chances of bad pixels).

The iPad mini has 35% more screen area than the Nexus 7, yet the devices are roughly the same size in term of volume. How could it get the same battery life since powering the display and backlight is an important battery drain?

35% is also a big difference in terms of LCD manufacturing, raising the chances of bad pixels and other defects. And like other said, Apple needs to produce X millions of them and still make a profit, while Google's Nexus 7 is just a marketing tool sold with little or no profit, they could only produce a million a month and it wouldn't make any difference to shareholders.

What is wrong with you people asking for a plastic iPad Mini?

I'm referring to the 2nd gen Nexus. I haven't heard about build quality issues with that device. And the new Kindle devices are getting good reviews (at least from a hardware perspective).

Exactly.  The genius of the iPad ecosystem (at least from the developers' perspective) is that there is only one logical screen size.  Yes the retina iPad uses higher resolution images and vector drawings and fonts are drawn at twice the resolution, but developers don't have to do anything to account for that.  I imagine that the same isn't true on the Andriod side and tablet makers can make up whatever screen sizes they want and just hope developers support it.

Well if Apple had the ability and supply to release a retina mini this year but purposely chose not to, the I don't know what to say other than Apple is inviting people to go elsewhere.

Have you compared the weight of a 5s to a 5c?

Seems like a heavier tablet would be a marketing challenge.

Are these the same supply constraints that sold 9 million iPhones in 3 days?

OK I'd love to see Apple PR explain all that to consumers who will have ads shoved in their face and read reviews telling them that the Kindle and Nexus 7 devices have much better displays and are cheaper. If there really are these incredible engineering issues that Apple and their display partners haven't been able to solve for then I hope Apple doesn't update the mini this fall (except swapping slate for space gray) and just knocks down the price.

The res is different. But it doesn't matter because we know hindsight will prove this story to be bullshit.

He didn't mean in terms of himself. But I think he should have thought about his comment in that we still have Haswell Pros (MacBook and Mac) coming, iPads and iPods.

Keeping supply a little tight at times is one of the oldest tricks in the book. There's a fine balance between have enough and having too much. Besides, seeing as they can't make their phones too far in advance and at the end of the day they don't know how many of each model people are going to order, making 9 million phones in a short period of time is not easy.
