Iconic takes photo journey through 35 years of Apple products

Apple devotees may want to consider adding a new book to their coffee tables, as Iconic offers a photographic tribute to the Cupertino company's products and innovations, from the Apple I on through today's iPads and iPhones.

Iconic: A Photographic Tribute to Apple Innovation was four years in the making, and it features images of as many Apple products as the author could locate. Jonathan Zufi, the book's creator, captured more than 150,000 photos in the process of making Iconic, including rare prototypes and Apple packaging. Of those photos, more than 650 have made their way into Iconic, and Zufi displays more than 3,500 others on his Shrine of Apple website.

For the last four years, Zufi has been collecting Apple products, amassing his collection of more than 500 products from online and other sources. It is that collection, along with contributions from Apple fans worldwide, that provided the subject matter for Iconic.

The book is divided into six sections, with the first focusing on Apple's desktop history. It begins with the Apple I ? the company's first computer, which often sells for hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction ? and follows through to the 2012 iMac. The next section deals with Apple's portables, from the 16-pound first-generation Macintosh Portable on through the MacBook Air.

From there, the book explores peripherals, looking at Apple's printers, digital cameras, and other products. Another section deals with Apple's iDevices, which have led to the company's rejuvenation and ascension, starting with the iPod and following through to recent iPhones and iPads.

The latter sections explore Apple's prototypes ? with images taken of devices from Apple enthusiasts' personal collections ? and even the company's product packaging, which has long been acknowledged as a small but key differentiator for the iPhone maker.

The book also contains forewards and essays from a number of important figures, commentators, and influencers from Apple's history. Among those are Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, early Apple employee Daniel Kottke, Ken Segall, Jim Dalrymple, and more.

The form of the book itself is meant to align with the design sense of the products it hails, with its landscape layout measuring 12" x 9.625". Iconic is printed on 105lb. GoldEast matte paper, with a dust jacket printed on 105 lb. art gloss with film lamination. The endpapers are printed on 95 lb. white woodfree, plain white paper. The whole production is Smyth sewn-bound. The independently-published book will also be available in a Classic Edition, which comes with a book case designed to look like the form factor of assorted Apple devices from the 1970s and 1980s.

Iconic is available for order now from the book's site. The standard version, available to ship now, costs $75, with shipping calculated at check out. The Special Edition costs $300, and ships in mid-October.

It's on your end, because the video works for me. I'm on Safari and Snow Leopard at the moment.

$75 really isn't expensive for this kind of book. Just ordered one, though shipping was expensive; $60 UPS Priority, only option. The Special Edition is indeed expensive, and a total no-go for me; having all these colorful Apple computers used through the year I'm certainly not going to put a beige box on the coffee table.

I wondered who took the photos, and found they do that themselves, with a little help:
Now it’s time to start taking photos (and thanks to Professor Forest McMullin – (see his work here) – for helping get our setup working). We are using a Canon EOS Rebel Xsi with an X lens, and all products are shot on a Manfrotto 220PSL Still Life Table. This awesome table allows us to place a light source underneath to get the full white lit background that helps us get our shots looking so great. All photos are imported on to a Mac and post processed (touch up, meta data, etc) using Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3, both great products whose capabilities we haven’t even scratched.

Update: We think our photos are awesome, but we know that we are nowhere near the quality and sophistication of the images you see at Apple.com (we’re not even sure if these are photos that are touched up, or super high res composite images). Indeed, you can find some photos on Flickr that top ours, both in quality, color correction, white balancing and overall warmth and setting. We’re learning quickly what people prefer and we’re trying to adapt, so please contact us with any feedback about our work and where we can improve.
Way to much money.

I bought the Apple Design book for about $35 last year. While it was a nice book, it was a little unimpressive.

I'll try this one as well and see how it is. $75 seems ok, not $300.

I guess that depends where you live.  Shipping for me in Los Angeles is $11 for USPS Priority.

It is obvious you don't appreciate the value or the quality of this book.

I appreciate the quality, certainly, as well as (particularly) the quality of the special edition. Value, I’m not so sure.

But again, the quality is quite probably unparalleled. Just not $75 or $300 worth of unparalleling.

I mean, I love the juxtaposition of the modern (actual) metal book casing and the Apple ][-designed casing. And I really love that they went and made custom Apple ][-style case cases in the first place. Bu~t… I have five of my own already.

First thing I thought when I looked at their site’s pictures of the case was that it’d be neat to turn it into an actual computer, except then the only thing it could be is… a Hackintosh, which isn’t classy. Or maybe an iMac’s logic board is small enough to fit in there; who knows.

It's now $99/$149 because they thought S&H was too expensive themselves
