That's precisely what Apple needs to invigorate PowerMac sales. Price points of $1299-$1699-$1999-$2499 would go a long way to sell more Macs to serious users and people looking to upgrade a 6100/7200/8500 etc. AND it would attract some new users looking for more than just an iMac because they are accusomed to the expandability of a PC.

Another point. Holding off releasing a speed bumped Power Mac will do little to sell a computer that isnt selling at its current price point. Especially when the most likely purchasers know that an increase of speed is due, and can wait as much as a month or two to purchase.

For those who read JD's post & are taking it seriously (weither you believe it or not). Understand that JD is being sarcastic. In no way is it meant to be taken seriously. For those you who are taking it seriously & responding in a serious way (again weither or not you believe it), JD is laughing at you because his stories are always really obviously fake & sarcastic, yet there's always those who take it seriously ... it blows the mind ...

My sources originally indicated that Apple would be announcing Powermac G5s no later than yesterday, with immediate availability for the high end, 1.6 GHz G5, and the 1.4 GHz and 1.2 GHz models shipping in Feb and March, respectively. In April, a dual 1.6 GHz Powermac will begin shipping, bringing Powermac performance into an entirely new realm.

Now these same sources have informed me that Apple has delayed announcing the new Powermac G5s, for reasons known only to Apple. Some speculate that they are waiting for the channel to clear of older Powermacs, while others think that Apple may be waiting for media hype over the new iMac to subside, so that G5 coverage is as high as possible, thus maximizing Apple's "free" advertising.

What these sources all confirm is that Apple is sitting on new Powermacs right now. They may further delay the G5 Powermacs in lieu of speed-bumped G4 powermacs, depending on other factors that my sources could not delineate a this time. Possible reasons include lack of market saturation with Powermac G4s, and the inherent business risks associated with implementing such an enormous performance boost in the Powermac line. A jump from 867 MHz to 1.6 GHz may very well hurt Apple's business more than help it, for Apple could mine consumer demand for Powermacs midway in performance between the existing Powermac G4s and the Powermac G5s.

Another possibility is that Apple will delay the Powermac G5s so that they can stockpile enough G5 chips to meet demand that exceeds projections. In this case, it would be wise of Apple to speed bump the current Powermac G4s, and after stockpiling G5 CPUs for 6-9 months, introduce the Powermac G5s for immediate availability, according to some sources deep within the bowels of Apple HQ.

Another source has confirmed at least one suspicion: Apple may be delaying the Powermac G5s because their margins would be under 30%. Apple would rather wait for the cost of new motherboard components, such as 8X AGP, DDR RAM, high speed bus, to drop to acceptable levels to keep margins high. This typically requires that Apple wait until the components are shipping in mid to low range PC boxes so that prices fall low enough. Adopting new technology too soon eats into Apple's industry leading margins and threatens the Cupertino based computer companies profitability.

We may never know the true causes of the delay in new Powermac announcements, but in any event, sources have confirmed that new Powermacs have been delayed, and if the speed-bumped Powermac G4s are introduced, then this will confirm that Powermac G5s have been delayed until a future release date.

Delays are common with new product introductions, so this delay may indicate nothing significant at all, beyond botched shipping schedules, missed airline flights, or executive-employee illness. No other delays are confirmed at this time.

Seems like Junkyard Dawg has lost credibility especially with that last stolen yarn he spun from spymac last month. if you want to write fiction, take it off this board.

your "sources" isn't credible here anymore. suggest you change your handle :-)

So in other words, the next PowerMac might be a G5, unless it's not. In which case it would be a G4. And it's going to be released 2 days ago, or maybe in weeks to come.

    Thanks for the update

Bullshit - 250 % ??? your haven't heard of the very good performance of Altivec-Enhanced Software PlugIns for audio, right? the dual 800 G4 outperforms some real expensive wintel boxes in that category...

anyway - apple should get it's ass up to take OS X to a new performance-level that cannot be reached for wintel/ wamd -boxes for at least 6 month... especially for "normal" tasks like integer and normal floating point operations...

You obviously don`t know what you`re talking about. Of course you have to put a dual against a dual Wintel. Altivec in audio is not very effective plus often unsupported. I`m gonna tell you where the action is right now: VST-Instruments and software samplers to replace the AKAI`s. Please compare i.e. Halion Sampler Steinberg. G4/867 against P4 2,2GHz. 250% more voices for the PC. This is just an example for most plug in`s. No excuses in audio for the Mac right now.

The only reason that I wanted to believe that Apple was ready to release the G5 any time soon is logic. In light iof the recent gigantic Mghz increases by other companies ( enough to make the myth thing a moot point ) it seemed insane not to get going and do something about it.

Of course if Motorola really is floundering on the G5 and a sunken ship like Moogs suggests in another thread then we would still be experiencing the cloud of mystery we have now.

JYD is famous for his wild stories ( for over a year or more now ) going from a down on Apple, they can't do anything right to a story about this drunk friend that works for Apple. He has the real stuff on what's happening. Uh huh.

I would only hope that Apple releases the G5 sometime soon but, as far as JYD and Philbot ( hmmmm JYD = Philbot ? ) I don't think they know anything.

Shame on anybody who takes advantage of the hopes of the people on this board for their own amusement. If you practice your lives this way just remember what goes around comes around ( even if it's in the form of the condemnation of your peers ).

As to what's up with Apple? I can't help the feeling that there is something mysterious going on. It's just a gut feeling but, I've learned to trust my gut. Lets just hope it's something good.

Well, some people here have been talking about Apple going Apollo on the PowerMacs and reaching 1.4GHz by the end of the year, maybe even more, but below 1.7GHz. Then some see the G5 come at MWSF 03. starting at around 1.6GHz max

    What speaks against that?

Well, Steve promised he wanted to close the GHz gap...

    If the G5 doesn't come out at 1.6GHz in mid 2002, we'll have a 2GHz gap by MWSF 03...

I think we're in for a speed quantum leap this year, not a bump.

isn't not knowing the whole story part of the fun?

I wonder how many Dell-droids have this much excitement before a launch?

In Dell-land, there is no product launch. They just come out with the faster parts once they're available. DDR is stable? Dump it in. 2.2GHz? Pour it on!

This is what drives me nuts with Apple. They have to wait (and wait) to put better tech into their products. They should've put DDR into the PowerMacs in 2001. No big hoohaa at MWNY or whatever, just put it out!

I understand that MWNY, MWSF, MWTK, etc. get them huge amounts of press and free publicity, and this shouldn't change. But their products shouldn't stagnate for months with absolutely no change.

They are doing this with laptops and look at the result. Sales are up again! They need to start doing this to the PowerMacs. This way, maybe you'll stop all the people holding onto their $$ waiting for the next big thing. When they need a computer they'll just get the latest model because it would have tech in it that isn't at least 6 months out of date.

Goto <a href="http://www.macosrumors.com"; target="_blank">www.macosrumors.com They say that they know there will be PowerMac G4s released soon. "Although the exact date is a mistery even to most insiders."

When is MWNY? Is it in July? ...

If so it seems to long to wait for a G5. I just don't think the current towers will sell. Even a Dual 1Ghz. Heck for 3499$ I wouldn't buy it if my life depended on it. Now if someone want to give me one... well that would be fine. If apple is really going to release these rumored powermacs they will have to cut the price big time.

Sadly, literature classes have wrecked many great books :shakes head:

If you ever have the stomach for it, there's an excellent film version (Spencer Tracy, Frederick March, Gene Kelly, 'Darren' from Bewitched, 'Capt. Potter' from MASH, 'Sherrif Lobo', and a host of others).

Really well done (and much better than reading it!)

    Ding ding ding ding ding!!!

LOL! Don't any of you ever get sick of the rumor sites "confirming" that sh!t is delayed? Like, DUHH, they predict a release on the 22nd, then when nothing happens they say that their sources "confirmed" that the release was delayed. I don't understand why this isn't hilarious to more people. These rumor sites, they are all a joke, every one of them, none of them know ANYTHING, it's all pulled from the ass...

I thought I did a pretty good MOSR impression, actually! Served up the BS steaming hot, just the way everyone likes it!
