I don't really use Garageband much, but I just hope that it doesn't end up looking like Ableton Live or something. The minimalist, flat look can indeed be taken too far, and not all apps will benefit from such a look, IMO. What's next, a realistic looking Pinball game app is going to go all flat and minimalistic too?
Realistic looking interfaces still have their place, especially in many music apps. If I'm using a music app that's an emulation of a real instrument like a synth, I like the display to look exactly like that real instrument, not some simple, flat blueprint of it. If I'm watching porn, I'd prefer to see real porn with real people and not have to watch flat people in pastel colors with no shadows or detail.
My point is, keep the realism in certain apps. Just because the OS itself is in a flat phase, that doesn't mean that the flatness has to spread to everywhere.
I'm also guessing that this flat, minimalist phase is just a trend, and in a few years time, something else will come along. Everything gets stale eventually. Skirt lengths go up and down, and so does OS design trends.
This is so fugly it makes me want to cry... I haven't updated from iOS 6 & don't plan to and the first Mac OS X that will pursue this idiotic UI design, will be the first Mac OS X version I won't updgrade to. I didn't mind when they tuned down the stripes and brushed metal in early Mac OS X versions, but this is too much to swallow.

I'm with most others here. I really ABSOLUTELY HATE the new iOS 7 look. It makes me almost physically ill – especially when I think of the really beautiful icons from iOS 6 that are being thrown away in favour of the most appalling rubbish.
These two new iPhoto/Garageband icons are a really great example of all that's wrong with the new approach. They take two particularly beautiful existing icons – icons that are attractive, distinctive and eye-catching – and replace them with banal, ugly-as-hell monstrosities that fail in their job as icons in every way.
The new two-colour appearance helps them to get lost among all the other disgustingly lurid iOS 7 icons, so they're now much harder to spot at a glance; all the beauty that was once there is gone, and even the colours chosen are nasty.
The thing that really gets me about these two new icons, though, is that clearly absolutely no thought at all has gone into their content! They're just the existing icon designs recreated in two colours, basically. And that's a brain-dead approach that I'd never have imagined from Apple until now. The old icons worked because they were realistic and beautiful. The new icons do not, because they're not even iconic! They just take the realistic elements from the old icons and render them in mono, which doesn't work at all. If Apple really wanted flat, monochrome icons, it should have started from scratch and done new designs that worked meaningfully in that way. That palm tree in the iPhoto icon in particular looks ridiculous. The icon does not have a recognisable-at-a-glance iconic effect; it's just a mess in the area where the three photo edges and the palm tree 'collide'. Everything about these new icons just shrieks "inept"!
Remember the story about how Steve Jobs would get obsessed with icons to the extent that he complained to someone that a single pixel was the wrong colour? My god, I wish he could come back and fire the bozos who are presiding over the systematic destruction of the most beautiful interface in the world – the interface that he took such pains over himself. Steve Jobs had taste, and iOS 7 is conclusive proof that whoever is now taking user interface decisions does not. If it's Jony Ive (and I assume it is), he really ought to be ashamed of himself. He's squandering the trust placed in him and really ruining what made Apple distinctive. And for no good reason.

I hate the new direction so much that if there were any sensible alternative to buying Apple I'd probably take it. I agree with most post on this board. What I hate most is the all white theme. I hate the way iMessage, Notes, iMail, Game Center and iTunes looks. When typing in iMessage, Notes, iMail its like typing into a flashlight, no matter how much you adjust the brightness its still too bright. iTunes?. Well what a mess the icons the menus, things that was obvious like (Up Next) button are missing. I use Remote to DJ thru the MacBook Pro where I keep my music, it sucks now trying to setup songs. I couldn't find the Play Next so i had to do things manually, until I stumbled upon the hidden feature. Why hide that? I miss the DJ feature .

Skeumorphics looked especially cheesy in Notepad and Calendar with that awful fake leather header.
true, it went too far, but if you were bothered (as I was for instance), there was a small utility to tweak it and you got nice clean window again... I always change Dock appearance to 2D from default 3D, which I can't simply stand looking at and using, and even though the Dock's side positions in OS X 10.9 look perfect, 'Tiger' like, it seems that there's no possibility to change it in its default bottom position. Also, Candy bar (icon tweaking utility from Panic), had been discontinued some time ago, which also indicates rather profound changes that Apple is doing in the UI and how they close slowly on customization of Mac OS X (which was never as big as in Windows).
That being said, I have no problem sticking with OS X 10.8 or 10.9 (it looks pretty much like functional upgrade to Mountain lion, rather than transition from OS 9 to OS X), so if they really will go the MS path in few years and merge iOS and OS X UI, I will not upgrade anymore and they won't see a single penny from me.

There are legitimate gripes about iOS 7, like artist/album view, in the Music app, that has now turned artist into one big playlist.
There are many positives as well, like control center and its quick access to certain functions.
To me, installing iOS 7 was like getting a new phone. I like it. If you don't like the look, just remember, they're just icons and that the underlying program is still there.
They probably have been using Apple products a long time and remember the ClarisWorks (or AppleWorks) suite of applications.
I have often wondered why I always write and say iWorks but have no problem with iLife... you are exactly right, It is because AppleWorks is still deep in the gray cells.

Regarding Garage Band's icon ... I wonder if the entire application has also gone flat in the next iteration? I sincerely hope not. That is one of the few applications where it works great. Using an amp or a synth and seeing the real look and feel is very productive IMHO (and I include Logic Pro X which I use daily) and I'd be very sad if all internal graphics flatten. I can just imagine the mixer being reduced to a stark white look with a few, very thin black and red lines, and having to stare it it trying to figure out where the slider buttons are ... shudder.
Otherwise like you, I like most of iOS7. Only Calendar seems to have gone too far, which is ironic.
I just want an update to the desktop version of iPhoto to have the same feature suite as the iOS version. Also a better way to sync iPhoto libraries between the desktop and iOS version would be nice. It's a pain if you edit a photo on the iPad and would like it to show up on the Mac (you have to save it to the camera roll, delete the original on the computer, and reimport. Plus it'll save two copies on the iPad which isn't great)
I mostly like iOS7 and am amazed what Ive and Craig have accomplished in less than a year: complete overhaul in design, added some functionality and … created a 64bit version. I also am aware that this is a transition to a new mobile device era. Yes, we all feel the need of refining the design. Yes, there is need to rethink usability. And yes, there is need to integrate more within iOS and between iOS and OSX apps.
I think Apple is delivering and incredibly smooth transition and I believe we are just seeing the peak of the iceberg. In 2014 we are going to be blown away in hardware, applications and iCloud while iOS7 and Syrah are going to be refinements to the platform.
If not, I had some nice wishful thinking… can't harm.
What is wrong with the current iPhoto icon that would warrant being replaced by yet another sterile Teletubby replacement? iOS7 has too much white and turquoise in it already- too sterile IMHO- which make these colors all the more garish. Was the color palette chosen by the Crayolas one would most likely trash? I'm so glad I got a space grey/black iPhone this time. Tones it all down some. My 4S was white but after I installed iOS 7 it was headache inducing.
