The entire event was awesome, pretty happy about everything EXCEPT the decision to continue selling 3 generations old iPad for $399. That's just wrong. They should have either dropped it completely, or at least updated it to use A6 chips or something. It's ancient today, and is basically a pixelized mess, A5, and outdated internals at the same price of the new iPad mini which is massively superior in every way, including 4X the pixels and a CPU/GPU thats 2 generations newer. The iPad 2 is gonna struggle with new software, especially considering most of it is being optimized for 64bit and the A7.
Not sure why we, as more tech savvy end users, would be considered with this. If selling older devices can help sustain Apple as a business and provide buyers who don't need the latest hardware with cheaper devices, then profit from those sales can be funneled into better R&D and hardware supply.
So the mini has gotten heavier (presumably due to more battery needed. Its gotten .01" thicker as well.
The iPad Air is nearly a half pound lighter, and considerably smaller.
I had been pretty sure I'd go for the Retina mini (mostly because my left arm is starting to suffer pretty serious pain from holding it) but I'm beginning to think I may go for the Air.

So, I'm pretty happy with these announcements, except... WHY IN THE WORLD would anybody get the iPad 2 at this point? I feel apple should either retire it & sell the 3 or 4 discounted, OR drop the price.
I have users who need the screen size, but not the horsepower or Retina since my app is used on a stage for musicians. Saves them $100 to get started.

I'm talking about cubic millimeters of battery space, and assuming that it doesn't take too many of those to be noticed missing.... with that, and if the corresponding use of the touchID interface pushed the battery life negative (it's gotta be more than just a home button press... lots of power to scan the finger) to the current ipad, it was likely a really hard sell to put it in place and say.... "we just lost 30 minutes putting TouchID in, and 5 minutes of video playback time loss for every authentication...." (All number fabricated to protect the ignorant;-);-))

I'm not complaining but at 399 and the smaller form factor and weight, I will probably opt for the iPad Air.

That seems to be a better long term fit... but my guess is the iPad mini retina is an expensive [at apple's margins] beast to make (remember it's not subsidized like the iPhone, but has a display nearly as dense, and 4x larger... which is a huge amount of 'perfect glass' you need to construct ), relative to it's size.
Guys I think most people must be aware that iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display has exactly the same specs except screen size, dimensions, weight and PRICE POINTS.

BTW, with the naming of iPad Air, according to one of the posts I have no doubt that there will be an iPad Pro coming next year. I will not wait for that because I am using the original iPad and I want to align my Apple devices to the same years (not possible on the 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display mid 2012 because I bought it last year and it still work like a charm - might replace it after 5 years i.e. year when iPhone 7s comes out) but I've already got an iPhone 5s to replace my iPhone 4S. I really want to know what you guys think of this.

Why does it worry you? Why not just get what you want and need, and be happy with that?

Agreed, I wasn't talking about RAM but yes $5 is about right. Joe Blow can buy it for $1/Gb, I'm sure Apple can get if for a lot less.It's the memory pricing that makes me walk away empty handed from the Apple store.
