First of all, what the heck is iMail?

Second of all, it's not your client, but your server acting up.

Don't worry, try again later, or change your account.

...You only have one account? Get another one (or more) for free (there are many out there).

If the problem persists, call your mail-SP.

BTW: the Application is called Mail not iMail.

I guess you are using a dial up connection. The error u mentioned is probably due to the fact that your connection is slow and trying to download a large file.

try not to surf the internet while downloading the large file. If that doesn't work, complain to your dial-up operator.

If u are not using dial-up, complain to your network operator.

Damn, try reading his post. Or not just taking a blind jab at what you think might be fact.

First of all, the guy was trying to send a message, not download an attachment or something similar.

Second of all, dialup has nothing to do with it, I can attest to this. Mail works, however slowly.

Lastly, his ISP (or network admin) probably has nothing to do with it. Unless they are using the man-in-the-middle technique, the fault lies on the side of the mail server.

What I would do if I were him is get in contact with the mail service provider and work this out.

It may be that you trying to connect to the SMTP server unauthenticated, though I'm chancing a guess there. Mail should ask you for a username and password if this is the case, though you haven't said as much, so I'll throw that out there anyway,

Since I don't know much more to say about this, rather than rant about what I don't know, I think I'll just let someone else with more knowledge about this sort of thing explain further.

The message means that mail relay you are using doesn't allow you to send emails.

    Mail/Preferences/Account/SMTP-Server could be wrong.

Internet providers usually allow relaying only for their own IP Ranges. Are you trying to send emails from different places (PB / iBook)?

    Example:

You are able to send email from your home over dial up. Later on in your office you connect to Ethernet. Mail.app tries to send emails to your dial-up provider but the IP is unknown and gets rejected because it's another company's network.

If everything is configured properly but the problem still occurs write a mail to ;-) or better call up your provider and ask if they have problems with ther smtp-relay. And if they have, you know that thousands of people may have complained already and support staff will be very very friendly ;-))

    Hope that helps.

I've seen this also, intermittently, and always over a perfectly good broadband connection, in multiple locations.

It seems to be isolated to using a mac.com email address and the mac.com SMTP servers. And, it is intermittent, so it's not a config problem. It's a problem with Mac.com servers AFAIK

Dear Spart, apparently u know nuts about this issue, so u cannot tell others off too.

I am using a dial up connection, and I encounter the problems Machadalic faced. I know he is trying to send a message, but sometimes one may be trying to do too many tasks such as receving large emails and sending emails at the same time.

I found out that most of the time, the error occurs when the above mentioned occurs. probably due to the fact that Mail is not fantastic at handling multi-tasks or due to the slow dial-up speed.

I expereinced such problems too with braodband, but rather infrequently, which leads me to assume that dial-up poses more problem due to the slower connection speed.

I am trying to help thats all sparty.

If u have a problem with that, something is wrong with u.

Sorry for not replying soon enough to explain better...

    I have DSL.

I still get the message even though it's a simple text email and no other tasks are being performed on my mac.

It has worked a few times but pops up more often than not.

I called both Apple and my ISP (SBC Global).

Apple claimed it is my ISP problem, so I called them and after talking to two people the third one actually knew about OS X...

He pointed out the settings and changed my password and then changed it back and he got me going again...

    until tonite... same message!!!

    any ideas?
