Changing from a CD Changer to an iBook

So, I suggested to my father the idea of switching the CD Changer he uses to an iBook. I told him about the ideas of playlists and smart playlists and the ease of searching for an album, with iTunes..... Then, I told him about how it could be connected to the local network with an AirPort card.... Then, he said, I will add it to my suggestion box (not that he actually has one, of course)



So, I was wundrun if anybody had an ideas or suggestions of how one would approach this. I was thinking the easiest way is to get that doohickey (Apple Spell found THAT correct) that takes audio from the USB for the clearest sound, and then connect it to the network with an AirPort card (as hauling it upstairs every time an update was necessary or iTunes had to look up a CD would become painful).... Then, wouldn't it work very well? Is there anything I am overlooking?



What about HD space and when is iTunes coming out with native (more than it has now) MPEG-4 support?

    Well, the whole process of putting the cds on the iBook will take quite a while, espically if it is a large library.



    I have a Roland UA-30 usb audio interface for sound input, and output the the speaker system. It sounds very nice . Maybe if they eventually release a bluetooth version? I'm not really sure of the plausability of it, but would be cool.



    For HD space, 30 gb should be pretty good.

    This might be a better idea.



    Otherwise, you'll need a computer in the same room as the stereo. It needs to be there to control iTunes and so you have something to plug the USB to audio dongle into. This means fan noise/unsightliness(?).



    If you get one of those recharging cradles then an iPod would be very cool and 20G would easily replace a 400CD changer (which I assume your dad uses now).



    Obviously portable use is a bonus.



    If you go with the iBook then you can get a remote control from keyspan (i think, check google).

    Possibly too high a geek factor, but then maybe not.

    Well, he likes using the CD Changer, 5 discs one after another, and considering the iPod can not set up dynamic playlists like that, this would be a better deal.. also for more high quality audio that would be going through the whole first floor.



    well, airport would be a must because wiring downstairs would not be fun, and I would not want to have to carry it upstairs everytime it needs an update when all I could really need to do is use an AirPort with another computer and bah-da-bing!
