An iPod that plays Doom?

Posted:
in iPod + iTunes + AppleTV edited January 2014
In the latest issue of Wired Magazine there is a small article about a Nokia phone that can play the original Doom pc game. Also there is chart that lists when certain computers/devices have been able to play the game. In 2003 Wired predicts that some one will port Doom over to the iPod.

Is this even remotely possible? The iPod doesn't have a color screen and its proccesor cann't be that powerful. Furthermore what would the controls be?

Wired also predicts that at Macworld Steve will reveal another iBreaththrough.

Doom can run on non-color devices. Since the iPod has four buttons along the outside of the scroll wheel, I could see those used for movement, and the center button for firing. No idea what would switch weapons. I suppose it could be done, but so far, we've yet to see anyone actually write a physical application for the iPod, so I would say that prediction is a bit premature...

What would the key be for opening doors? Multiple keys at once?

Since Wired predicts so much, I predict that Wired is going to become even worse than it already has. Five years ago or so, they were some kind of interesting magazine. But now, they aren't even independant.

maybe use the remote for some added buttons?

    maybe a custom "gaming" remote

It would be really great if doom can be played on the ipod. It will definately attract more sales.

But its probably not very practical now. Think of much much battery power will be used when playing the game!! Right now, playing brick out already uses quite alot of battery power, Doom will definately require more.

But I really hope the ipod will incorporate more games in the future. This will make the ipod a truely great mobile device!

you wouldn't need the four buttons around the scroll wheel. I think the reason apple made the scroll wheel touch sensitive is because you could make it into any number of buttons. With the the first one all you could do was spin it. with the new one you could program it so that top part of the wheel was up, the bottom down ect. Hell if you wanted to you could give it numbers, which i don't think the will do, and make it a phone. It doesn't have to be used as a jog wheel.

I think it will be very hard to segment the touch wheel...

i don't see any of the proposed developments of the touchscreen happening...

    handwriting recognition?

    ummm yeah right

    gamepad?

    unlikely

    telephone pad?

rotary phone would make more sense...

With solid state trackpads, as Paul said, I don't believe you can segment them. The actual device doesn't know where on the pad you touched it, it only knows that you did. It will then track the movemet until you release. Just like on a laptop trackpad.

I believe it was Compaq that showed off a device that was using gesture technology to actually run Doom off of it. This was years ago though, and I can't remember the name. Basically, you held this palm sized device, and you would dip it forward to move forward, or dip it right to go right... if I recall coreectly. Always wondered what cam of that technology....

Are you sure about this? I had a Dell laptop with a Synaptic driver and it could use the far right to scroll if you wanted to. The area for scrolling could also be resized or turned off, so it seems that it's not hard wired into the trackpad itself. So it seems doable. But why would you want to?

I would never in 10 million years play Doom on an iPod. The very idea is revolting! How could you defile such a beautiful thing with such horrible stuff as (shudder) Doom? Now if you can get Escape Velocity or Unreal Tournament to run on it sign me up for six of um. Network play baby, and while your add it, throw in bluetooth...

i have a nokia 7650 with doom on it. TBH battery life isn't really that much of an issue. moving the dinky joystick and aiming is a bit more of an issue but hey, maybe that's just 'cause i'm a crap doom-monger

BUT the main issue with having doom on my phone is the amount of memory it takes. the 7650 comes with around 4mb of shared memory. doom takes about half of that and then a quarter to actually be able to play. obviously the ipod wouldn't have this problem.

I always play brick out with the back light on so i dun have to strain my eyes. I guess i will probably play doom with the backlight too if doom is introduced on the ipod. This will definately put pressure on the ipod battery.

I never knew Nokia 7650 has doom!!!

Phones nowdays really has so many functions... maybe its time for a change

careful now, the 7650 support for mac is shite. you can send and receive BT files but no iSync and no addressbook link in (such as sms contact etc.)

    but dooms pretty cool

I cant' see the doom feature attracting more buyers. Why would anyone spend $400 to play a game on a crappy b/w screen when they can buy a gameboy advance for what $100?
