Palm for Christmas: should I upgrade?

Hi Everyone,

I just received a new Palm Zire for Christmas and I'm confused as to whether I should keep it, or upgrade it to an m500 or m505.

Basically, I'm concerned about the 2mb memory limit. I run my own business, so I go through a fair number of business cards and appointments. In addition, I'd like to put some Bible software (no more lugging a hardcover to church.) I'm no gamer, and can't see myself running a lot more than that.

The Zire cost CDN $159. (U.S. $99.) The m500 (8mb, monochrome screen) costs CDN $249. (U.S. $160.) The m505 (8mb, colour screen) is now discontinued, but the local Costco has units priced at CDN $349. (U.S. $225)

I'd welcome any suggestions that other Digital Hubbers may have, since I'm having a hard time making up my mind.

My guess would be you'd need something with more memory. I thought the Bible software programs usually needed more than a couple megs (more specifically, storing the Bible needed more than 2 megs).

there is no way that you wil be able to load much software onto 2mb....My advice, get the m505 from Costco. (there is not much difference between that and the m515). With the 8mb and the ability to expand using the SD-card slot, you can fit the NIV and King-James version of the Bible in your pocket for Sunday

Upgrade. Get something bigger. I say this becuase when I got mine (Vx) I started to download lots of software (Games, Dictonaries etc etc) so you will most likely run out of space soon.

    Thanks for the quick replies.

Ants, can you tell me what IS the difference between the m505 and the m515?

I own a m505 and donT remember the details exactly, but here goes...

my m505 came with a bonus 16meg-SD card (because palm felt bad?) Because shortly after my purchase, the m515 came out with standard 16megs (internal memory). Also the m515 has a stronger/brighter backlight. Some of the m505s had a problem with static-buildup in the hotsync cradle and Palm had to replace many cradles (but mine never had a problem) and supposedly had fixed the issue with the m515s

Otherwise, both models function the same.

I am sure you would be a lot happier with either the m500 or m505 (expecially at clear-out pricing) compared the the Zire (with no backlight at all)

Hehe, I'd return it and wait till after January 7th to make a decision, just in case... With Apple, you really just never know...

Thanks Ants, I'm now leaning toward the m505.

And yes Greg, it has crossed my mind that the exchange should be made on January 8th. Staples doesn't take returns for Boxing Week, and if I have to wait till the New Year anyway, six more days won't make much of a difference.

Though I'm sure if Jobs rolls out an updated iPod/PDA, it won't be anywhere near CDN $349. anyway.

    Have you tried the Zire?

I guess opening the package would stop you from returning it, right?

BTW: I love my Zire. There is enough space for all your contacts and dates, the only caveat is the bible software. I don't know how big it gets.

If you need space... there is always the 5gb iPod...

Bingo. I've decided not to do anything (including opening it) till the 7th, then make a decision.

Unless Apple updates the iPod to accept on-the-road input - and drops the price - I think I'll go with the m505.

Of course, if a iPhone/iPod/PDA is announced at MWSF, all bets are off....
