maybe because the last thing they need is screwing up cred card transfers and thousands of dollars simply because of a page address change
If there's new product coming the Apple Store page will be closed down for an Update as it will say as such. That's the only time you'll know (other then a Press Release) that the new PowerMacs are arriving.
it was propably related to some routing problem regarding all akamai "powered" servers in europe... i don't know if you are from europe, but several people here experienced that problem... it was solved some hours later...

I've heard that they have to take the whole sight down because of their use of webobjects.
I've been having spotty access to apple.com over the last week or so. Other sites work fine. Maybe a particular backbone is having issues. I'm on the west coast.

I've had some problems with Apple's site lately too. The main page has made both IE and OmniWeb crash a few times and it's just been very slow compared to usual.

I know of other servers in California that were having trouble yesterday. I believe it was an issue with one of the backbones.
