The real bugbear I have about AAC happening (and I've done some experiments, it is outstanding) is that I'll have to spend a week or so ripping CDs again... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />
Technically I don't see why it's not a feasible upgrade: I believe there's enough power in there to do the job, and doubling the storage capacity through a firmware update would be almost magical!
Yeah plus the promises Apple made about QuickTime 6 and MP4 being so "useful" might come true.
I assume that the iPod will someday be able to play MP4, right? I mean, is it in the works, just waiting to be updated? I can't see why Apple wouldn't want to be able to say "8,000 songs in your pocket" rather than "4,000 songs in your pocket."
Or maybe current iPods just can't handle it and the Apple made false promises, as usual. And the new iPod featuring iMic/iListen/iSomething with a mic since those are already taken will be able to play MP4 AAC audio. That would be enraging considering I bought the iPod in anticipation of the MP4. But I'll still buy the new iPod...who wants to buy an iPod?
Absolutely: I suspect that the decoders in there can handle AAC (and don't forget, there are two ARM chips in there), so all it comes down to is whether or not thay can understand AAC: that's just the firmware.
It may happen, but it's going to take Apple hanging their balls out in the expectation that AAC will prove to be more popular than MP3. Given the proliferation of broadband Internet, this may be later rather than sooner...
