I’ve noticed shows these days tend toward BRIGHT, POWERFUL colors, too. I miss the ‘90s when sets looked real and not ludicrously overlit and colorful…

Buy the Samsung TVs from B&H Photo, which has the same prices, but no sales tax and free shipping.  Same doorbuster prices as Best Buy, Target and WalMart on most models.  I think it is funny so many people here hate Samsung just because of their phones and the lawsuit with Apple.  Or do you think it is cool to jump on the "I hate Samsung because Apple sued them" bandwagon?  Remember Microsoft and that old lawsuit?  Steve Jobs ended that rivalry because Apple was nearly bankrupt and needed an investment from Microsoft to survive.  They do make the best TVs on the market, so why pass up a good deal just because of your egos?  I don't care for 3D, but I just picked up the 65" Samsung LED LCD 6300 series for $1,497, saving $1,000 on the doorbuster price for the week.  I may not want their phone because of Android OS, but I do like their TVs and I could not beat that price.  My Samsung LED DLP 56" was a great TV, but happy to replace it with the 65" LED LCD.  I don't have $4K to drop on the top of the line Panasonic Plasma, that finally matches the quality of the discontinued Pioneer Kuro model.

    You’ve totally lost it.

Yeah, it’s hilarious to hate a company with absolutely no sense of morality or law¡

Or do you think it is cool to jump on the "I hate Samsung because Apple sued them" bandwagon?

Eh? I’ve hated Samsung since before they were sued.

Wow, that sounds horrible, dunnit? Replace “sued” with “cool” and you have the standard ‘hipster’ line. Point stands, though. You need to grow up.

Thanks for ludicrously oversimplifying history to help it match your incorrect point.

They do make the best TVs on the market

I wouldn’t believe that even if you had any proof.

…so why pass up a good deal just because of your egos?

Because I have morals, not an ego.

Samsung is hard to beat.  I tend toward LGs just because they tend to have decent panels and less processing on some models for faster refresh.  The UI is nothing to write home about but honestly I never use it anyway.

Vizio is a brand I'd like to support but has been hit or miss quality wise.  I've had luck with the Sonys but they tend to lose out in terms of price for value.  Their build quality is probably no better than Samsung.

    /shrug

If folks wish to avoid Samsung that's up to them but even Apple buys from Samsung.  It's not because their product suck.

Nothing, given that your premise doesn’t have enough information to go on.

Buying from Samsung, or Apple or any retailer is not a moral choice, unless you have information that makes it such. For example, buying a product from a well know company seems like a simple decision. You have been doing it your whole life. One day you find out that the product is made using slave labor and child labor. The products have not changed, neither has the company, just your knowledge. Now you have to make a decision, can you morally keep supporting this company or do you stop buying because the business practice goes against your beliefs or makes you morally uncomfortable or even outraged? Suddenly, with knowledge, it becomes a moral issue for you. Someone else who does not know, would not be morally wrong to buy until they also became aware of the practice... This is not really hard to understand. Right?

(the above is not about Samsung specifically, but is just an example of how it could become a moral choice. Thought I would mention this before someone tries to say that there is not child or slave labor involved... Tried to draw a bright line that most people could agree on.)

And how it relates to Apple, they are moving away from Samsung as a distribute. You cannot change something like this overnight, or even over the course of months. The writing is on the wall and the ship is turning...

If it is wrong for someone to buy a TV from Samsung then it is also wrong for Apple to buy displays from Samsung.  But it's not wrong of Apple to buy displays from Samsung since it's just a business decision.

There's plenty of information to show that you're the worst kind of apple fanatic.

Oh! He meant Apple themselves buying parts from Samsung. Thanks for the clarification. Totally different argument, but hey, we’ve seen it and shot it down before.

If it is a moral issue for you then the proper thing is to not buy anything with known Samsung components in it as well.

Morals/Ethics are not about just doing what is convenient.  That Apple cannot "change something like this overnight" is immaterial to the decision.  If components manufactured by Samsung WERE being built using slave labor (or whatever your "bright line") why on earth would you buy any product that uses it?  Frankly, I believe that Apple would drop Samsung as a supplier if this was true regardless of the impact to their business.  If they did not I would stop buying Apple products because it would be the wrong thing to do even though I like them a lot.

That TS makes this a moral issue is idiotic.  That he would castigate anyone buying a Samsung TV when he buys Apple products with Samsung components is crass hypocrisy.  Neither is particularly surprising.

I disagree. If the problem is a moral issue because it benefits Samsung's bottom line then regardless of whether it's a great deal on a HDTV, components fabricated and/or designed by Samsung, or even an acquisition by Samsung that doesn't contain it's name (see Google owning Moto for example) it's all the same issue.

PS: I haven't yet made a decision but I am leaning heavily towards a Samsung LED LCD HDTV.

I like Sony but take this with a grain of salt:

Best LED LCD picture of the year so far

    Sony KDL-55W900A

Maybe you have something against plasma. Maybe you're a gamer who wants the lowest input lag available. Or maybe you just love the idea of Quantum Dots. For any of these reasons or another, the Sony KDL-55W900A is a great alternative. It boasts slightly better black levels and color, and thus overall picture quality, than the Samsung F8000 below. It can also overcome even brighter rooms than the Samsung F8500 plasma. Best of all, a massive drop from its original asking price has made it oh-so-much more recommendable. The main downside now is that it's only available in a 55-inch size.

    Price: $1,998.00 - $1,999.99 (check prices)

    http://reviews.cnet.com/best-tvs-picture-quality/

You can also read the videophile opinions here:

    http://www.avsforum.com/f/166/lcd-flat-panel-displays

Of course everyone will claim the TV they bought is the best.

Interesting enough the sticky thread on the subject links to cnet.

    http://www.avsforum.com/t/1230050/the-help-me-choose-an-lcd-thread

The biggest issue for any good TV is the panel lottery.  Even Samsung and LG will use someone else's panels.  I've been lucky and gotten real LG IPS panels in all my LGs and not the cheaper PVAs.  If you find a TV that you want to consider run over to avsforum and see if this is an issue.

It actually doesn’t take a lot of TV watching to come to the conclusion that nht has. Most videophiles only buy plasma, and a quick search will give you a plethora of information on which TVs are best and why.

    ok-fine and dandy-

but I know that if I go to any neighbors house and compare their -any brand- HDTV  tv to my 55 inch LG LCD that is 4 years old I come away with the same conclusion, they all look very good... I don't think i will ever need to know THAT much about it to buy a tv with a great picture.

I can't even imagine giving that much of a shit about it. I got bigger fish to fry.

You're not looking well enough and have grown accustomed to fast action being choppy on even the LCD TVs with the fastest refresh rates.

ok maybe, but the whole thing is just not that important. It looks freaking awesome and personally I can't imagine giving a crap enough to try and make that a bit better. The leap in image quality from old Tube TVs to the current TV's is huge. It is almost not even fair to compare. It is more than good enough for me, and I would bet it is so for 90+% of prospective buyers.

I know we can get all hyped up over specs, or the darkness of blacks and the brightness of whites but seriously, the typical 1080p LCD or plasma is good enough for most peeps. Just saying

Actually I don't get to watch a lot of TV anymore.  When I do I prefer my projector just for the size despite the lower quality image (black levels etc).

I do prefer to get good quality stuff when I buy things.  It doesn't take much research at all.

I prefer LCDs over Plasmas simply because most of my rooms are brightly lit in the afternoons.  For best quality you get a plasma but I can understand why a lot of folks prefer a LCD.
