Audio via Airport-USB?

Hi

I'm just wondering if it's possible to play my mp3's via the new Airport-Extreme station in some way. IOW: is it technically possible to stream my audio signal to my AE-basestation and connect my amp to the basastation's USB-connection as audio-in? I really don't know, but when you can send a printjob via AE, why not a audio-stream with the right software?

hmm, I think there are amps with ethernet-connections.

would this work?

or am I a complete idiot?

thanx

no idea about the AE base station, but just get a

<a href="http://www.slimdevices.com"; target="_blank">SLIMP3</a>. Use it with a linksys WET11 for airport wireless conenctivity.

    no.

for one the ethernet and usb ins on amps are not mac compatible.

and for it to work the way you wanted software, well, actually a really good hack, would have to be written for the base station.

It would be cool for Apple to expand the use of the USB port on the new airport base stations. It seems silly just to limit it to printers.

A cool hack would allow the connection of an iMic to the basestation. The iMic is only $35 but it provides high quality audio in and out through a USB connect. Maybe Griffin Technologies will come out with this in the future.

    Thank you.

Can somebody please tell somebody to write such a hack/shareware? I'm sure I'm not the only one who will pay for this.

jante99: Never heard of the iMic before. Can you please post a link?

snazlord: I've seen the SLIMP3 and I like its functions. But it's not what I'm looking for. Well, and then I really don't want to pay 249$. Am I assuming right that you own one of these? happy user?

    I also checked <a href="http://www.macsense.com/product/homepod/default.htm"; target="_blank">Macsense's HomePod</a>: such a poor design.

Anyway: c'mon Apple, I just want to air my tunez wireless to my stereo without buying new hardware - via Airport of course, and then ... being able to remote my TiBook via a small Apple-tablet while sitting in the living room!

    This would be great.

I agree, though I was thinking more on the lines of bluetooth enabled speakers, so you wouldn't need to buy/set up a wireless network.

The iMic is made by Griffin Technology's and is a great way to get audio in and out of a computer with USB. For 35 dollars it is a steal. Go to

    <a href="http://www.griffintechnology.com"; target="_blank">http://www.griffintechnology.com</a>;

You can also buy them at the Apple Store.

The Powerwave also looks cool but it is more expensive.

    yes i own one and yes it's a little pricey ($249 + $100 for the WET 11).

But i've been trying to figure out a way to play music from my Tibook wirelessly over my stereo for a few years and this is the best i've come up with. other options include various devices which broadcast sound from your computer over an FM freqency. these are cheaper but the quality sucks. there are also various digital audio recievers (a la turtle beach audiotron) but these are even more expensive and not all of them are wireless or work with mac OS X.

The SLIMP3 actually works quite well - i'm very impressed with it so far. so impressed, in fact, that i bought a 120 GB external firewire hard drive and am ripping all my CDs onto it so that i can listen to any of my CDs at the push of a button without ever having to physically find a CD and put it in my stereo.

i guess it would be pretty cool if you could essentially do the same thing using a hacked airport base station (although then i'd basically be out $349! )
