Apple includes US in annual '12 Days of Gifts' app

As it has done for a few years now, Apple on Monday released its annual holiday season giveaway app in the iOS App Store, but this year U.S. customers are being included in the promotion as well.

12 Days

Apple's 12 Days of Gifts app has become somewhat of a tradition for iOS, with users offered free downloadable content from the day after Christmas into the new year.

In previous years, Apple limited the promotion to Europe and Canada, though for 2013, the company is bringing the app and freebies to the U.S. The program runs from Dec. 26 through Jan. 6, with each day bringing a free downloadable song, app, book, movie and more. Every offer is valid for only 24 hours and some content may not be available in all areas.

This is Apple's second digital holiday promotion, the first being the "Holiday Cheer" playlist, which consists of eight free Christmas songs available for download via the Apple Store app.

12 Days of Gifts is a free 64.7MB download from the App Store.

Anyone know what could possibly make an app like this, which is basically just a link to the iTunes Store, need to be nearly 65MB. It appears to have an info page, receives Notifications, and sends you a reminder. Maybe it plays a different Carol each day?

I'm Canadian and had this for a while... anyways its basically free downloads of stuff that you would never download anyway. Then you have a dilemma of getting it just because its free but not getting it since you don't really like it. Its not a big deal. Ideally, they should just make it one free download of anything of your choice.

@dennyc2013 with a demographic containng hundreds of millions of users, getting 12 apps that everyone would appreciate is difficult. I count on hoping that 1 or 2 might be interesting to me, and typically there's a game that provides some free amusement for a couple of hours, and something for the kids (last year were some great Toy Story shorts which are still being watched now). It's free, and it's a gift - allowing us to choose our own would a) create all sorts of developer and payment issues (not to mention confusion over likely price caps etc), and b) smacks of entitlement which we don't have.

    • Apple has been doing this for a while.. (At least three years now)
    • Both of them are copying the 12 days of Christmas (More like the song than the tradition or religious period).
    • Microsoft's event is the 12 days of deals.
    • Apple is giving away free digital content
    • Microsoft is having a sale
    • Don't be silly, you were not being sarcastic, just clueless

Welcome to the site. I hope you forget your password.
