Rovio's Angry Birds Go! racing game hits Apple's App Store

The newest entry in the popular Angry Birds franchise, a Mario Kart-like downhill racer set in a new three-dimensional world, is now available for download on the App Store.

Angry Birds Go

Angry Birds Go! is the 14th entry in the formidable birds-versus-pigs series and represents a radical departure from its siblings. Rather than slingshotting birds at the pigs' poorly-constructed houses, players can take control of carts piloted by characters from both sides.

Rovio has transformed Angry Birds's environment from 2D to 3D for the new racer, and the game comes with a large assortment of tracks that include standard racetracks, stunt roads, air courses, ad off-road races. Like Nintendo's seminal entry in the genre, powerups are available to collect throughout each course.

Also making its way into the game is Rovio's Telepods system. Telepods are specially-designed character figures, produced by Hasbro, which will appear in-game when scanned with a device's camera. Telepods made their debut with Angry Birds Star Wars II.

Angry Birds Go! is available now as a free, 97.7-megabyte download from the App Store.

I'm about Angry Birds out. They've taken this way too far. I know I'm not the only one either. I'd be surprised if they didn't make Angry Birds toilet paper.

Angry Birds needs to die already, and now they're ripping off Mario Kart.

I won't even install it anymore on my iPhone or Mac. But what do they care, they already have my money. I'm just sick of seeing it.

Can't wait to not buy this!

How can this brainless crud make loads of money (and therefore have sequels) yet the best games I have played (like Space Miner) get forgotten.

Yes but they've added a boat load of in app purchases including a $50 cart. I used to laud Rovio from not going the IAP route but sadly I cannot anymore.

Good for them, if they can pull it off. Nintendo certainly isn't interested in brining it to iOS.

Although, dabbling around a little, it looks like another case of a potentially great game ruined by F2P and IAP.

It is In-App-Purchase laden with bloat!!  The IAP should be to upgrade from the free version as a one time payment.

    Totally agree.

Sounds like you've downloaded? Can you play the game "offline"? I disable all internet connectivity before playing any games, thanks to all the obnoxious "spyware" crap installed in so many games these days. Before I even consider downloading I'd like to know if it's playable without connectivity.

Actually I haven't, nor will I. I read all about it on another site. Supposedly your 'bird' gets tired after 5 races and either you wait 20 mins or purchase a perk up.

Hype, marketing budgets, buying users in a store saturated with games where gems get forgotten.

Yep. And you get extra characters who are subject to the same limitation, but you can jump between them.

It is an model designed exclusively to extract money from people, but it doesn't need to ruin the game. It just means you can only complete birds*5 runs in a sitting, which is really a decent amount of gameplay. Then do other things. But that's not the only money-getting model in the game. As a sum, they may simply be too much. Including a $40 cart is a joke and a shame given the more sensible IAP balance in previous Rovio games.

In either case, I would hesitate to trash it without first hand experience.

Any game that has a $50 IAP deserves to be immediately be trashed. Wasn't the whole reasoning behind why Apple was beating Nintendo and Sony at the handheld gaming business because of $0.99 games versus $30 ones? In the long run a $0.99 game ends up costing way more than $30. I expect IAP abuse from smaller companies but not from Rovio.
