The G5 is a less power hungrey chip than the G4 and it runs cooler. Altough I think we wont see a G5 in the PB for awhile after it's released in the PM line first.

Um... no... the G5 (in its first desktop incarnation anyway) will require more power and produce more heat. Not as much as your average Pentium, but it wasn't designed like the Apollo.

All I want is a 1Ghz PowerBook G4. Well, that and a slightly higher resolution screen. Oh, and a Superdrive and better Airport reception.

I wouldn't expect to see a g5 in a Powerbook for about 2 years. I think Apollo will scale up to about 2.0GHZ with 0.13 & SOI & Continued process refinement over the next couple of years. With its low heat output, I'd imagine it's perfect for the Pbooks, and with a 133Mhz bump every 6 months, I think theres a lot of life left in the Apollo for the Pbooks.

And hey a 2ghz Pbook aint all bad

My PowerBook G4 (500MHz) has been a constant companion for some months. I was seriously tempted to swap it for a 667MHz with a combo drive, but managed to get through that initial lust phase.

There are a couple of things I've wanted for some time - a higher resolution display that's much sharper and brighter, and a SuperDrive.

The SuperDrive is a physical impossibility for just now. I'm doubtful the screen will improve much - even if it gets a higher resolution, I think the brightness is limited because it's such a drain on the battery.

The only other exciting update would be a G5, and since they look to be a while off for the desktops, I don't think we'll see them in a PowerBook until at least mid-2003.

I guess there might also be an increase in video memory, though 16MB is pretty decent.

What interests me much more just now is the prospect of an iBook G4. The current design is fantastic, so if they could just squeeze the chip in there, I'd definitely trade in my PowerBook for an iBook G4.

The only other thing I'd like to see in the iBook is a bigger hard disk. 20GB is pretty good for a notebook, but with OS X, OS 9, a handful of apps and files, and an iPod-ful of MP3s, you've filled half the disk already.

Apple needs to get their speeds up because of OS X. We have an iMac 400Mhz with 320MB and it really sucks at running OS X. Now my PowerBook 400Mhz is much faster. (Must be the G4). But it is still slugs around sometimes. Since apple has moved to OS X as the default I think they know the more power the better. The 667Mhz powerbook for 3000 is a joke. We need 733 and 867MHZ models at least.

I'm working in AE 5.5 on OS X with a dual 800 and it is dog ass slow. Apple can not keep a low mHz G4 PowerBook line through this year and expect to retain customers at the current price point, the limited and expensive upgradability, and the massive waste of time it would be to work on that platform when compared to win 2000 laptop counterparts and their creative programs.

As for the desktop, this just will not get any better until at least 1.5 gHz. if Apple retains G4 PowerBooks through this year, they will lose market share to professionals that want portability that is comparable to the desktops, and at a decent price. But right now, at 3300 the Powerbook is a glorified word processor, and iSoftware functional computer, but not at all Pro in performance.

By the way, this work is in draft quality. Best quality nearly kills my computer.

I think that the PowerBook should get a revision around MWTY. nVidia and ATI have announced their next generation mobile GPUs (nVidia's NV17M looks ****in sweet), and the 7460s are coming too. These new G4s are perfect for the PowerBook G4.

Yeah but it takes forever for the Powerbook to get good graphics.

Its not as simple as g5 = hotter than g4. It all depends on the actual speed of the chip and die size. the g5 will debut at high speed. at lower speeds, it may be cool enough for mobiles, but not for a bit. It's not an inherintly hotter/cooler design.

As long as the G5 is not hotter than the G4 why would apple have any trouble putting it in a powerbook. They already mastered that with the powerBook G4. It would be sweat if we saw a PowerBook G5 at MWT. I would be the first to order it.
