The real "problem" is that Apple does not have wireless charging in its own devices. As soon as Apple introduces iPhones with wireless charging, even if it only works with Apple branded chargers, all the dismissals of this feature will suddenly disappear.
The reason why this feature will be applauded if/when Apple releases it is that instead of a half-assed, poorly thought out feature, it will be seamless and practical.
Notice how everyone is now raving about a planned update to the USB standard (over a year away) that will provide a smaller bi-directional connector. Apple has offered this for over a year - it's called the Lightning connector - which Apple haters have criticized ad nauseum for not being backward compatible with their existing accessories.
Notice how the haters mocked the iPhone 5S's and iPad Air's 64 bit architecture. Now Samsung and others are desperately scrambling to produce their own version - likely many months away.

Why does wireless cost more than wired or why does a 9-volt battery you manually wired to a car charger cost less than rechargeable Li-Poly battery packs with large capacity with Lightning connectors?
Oops, double post. But more to the point, why doesn't the expensive stuff do what my $5 gadget can do? The time that my phone runs out on me is when I am hiking, not when I am in my house near plugs.

Why is it that most people can't comment without all the attitude, as though you are the most intelligent being on the planet and every other commenter is just an idiot? It's not necessary, let people express their opinion, whether flawed or not, and respectfully disagree. There will always be millions of people who like and want a particular type of solution and just as many who don't. So what? What do you think you're accomplishing by being condescending and implying stupidity upon others? Absolutely nothing but showing yourself to be a less than socially pleasant human being. How sad. FYI, while the author of this article is apparently unaware, there is a wireless charging system in existence made by a firm outside of North America, which charges your phone without you having to put it down on some pad or plug it in to anything, and no, it does not heat/cook you or cause cancer quickly. It's installed in the ceiling like a light fixture and connects to/charges your mobile device via "light", just as the rays of the sun carry energy. The only reason I'm not disclosing it here now is because I'm about to start negotiating distributorship with them. Call me a fool for mentioning it at all, those who are quick to call people stupid as addressed above, but I don't mind competition from intelligent persons who are prepared to go to the trouble to do a bit of research, keeps me on my toes, so I put enough of the info out there for you to start digging around yourself. No thanks, cables are a fine and flexible solution that I can take with me and use practically anywhere. No problems.
This all depends on the size of the battery to be charged and the type of device. For instance, I don't find my Fitbit Force as convenient to charge by having a plug-in charger and wouldn't lose much time or waste energy by having to wirelessly charge a sub(?) 100mAh battery. This is one area I think wireless charging would warrant a hard look.
I picked up two; one for the nightstand and one for my desk at work. The design isn't as elegant as what you show, but they work fine.
I really appreciate the ability to just plop my phone down when it's dark, and I don't want to wake my wife by fumbling for a cord and plugging it in. At work I have plenty of light, but picking up the phone when I walk around is just that much easier.
Apple's elegant lightning connector helps alleviate the cable fumbling issue somewhat, but I still far prefer doing away with it entirely.
Think I'll pass this one. For iphone users, it has to get a receiver to be with a wireless charger. I have a nexus 4 and my RavPower Qi wireless charging pad can charge it without a receiver. I'm happy with the charger so far as it's really light and convenient to carry.
For those who don't get it, consider situation my friend is in: His charging port is damaged and can no longer be used to charge his phone. His only option is to replace the iPhone (kinda expensive), repair the port (never heard of anyone doing that) or going with a wireless charging solution, which might be the least expensive option.
