My question is: Does the T610 have better reception than the T68i? I have only one complaint with my T68i, and it's about the poor reception. I get dropped calls every once in a while, I very rarely seem to get a very strong signal... and I'm in the middle of Los Angeles for cripes sake. Most of the time it works but even in my house it's marginal.

Compare that to my previous phone, a digital Nokia, which had perfect reception in our house and just about everywhere else. I mean the toys on the T68i are great, I sync it to my Mac, I use S-E Clicker which is awesome... but it's a PHONE. If it doesn't work when I need it to then what's the point?

So somebody please tell me they cleared that up with the T610 and I'll upgrade to it when it's available. BTW I'm using AT&T service, which is what I was using with our Nokia.

Does it look to you guys like the T608 has the same-size screen as the T68i? Sony Ericsson is pushing me toward the free T68i on Amazon.

I'm loosing balance on top of the proverbial fence. Where will I fall?

So, really.. is the T610 the T68i's successor or is it the T608/T606 pair? Seems much more like the latter.. Damn! I want a T610!

According to the chap from Germany earlier on in this thread, this phone will work with iSync. It appears that's it's OS contact and calendar dl features are the same as the t68i. I found these site informative (and linguistically entertaining) as well. You might check them out.

It's nice to see Sony include these Apple products in their slides.

[quote]Sony Ericsson has always been a leader in Bluetooth technology, and that continues with today's new phones. Interestingly, it was specifically mentioned that Apple has made a big deal about wanting more Bluetooth phones on the market.<hr></blockquote>

I have to wonder whether Sony Ericsson sees us Macheads as the "Profesional Pioneers" or the "Selective Pioneers?" Or maybe just the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004SUYJ/104-1854958-0100760?vi=glance"; target="_blank">"Pioneers Who Got Scalped"</a>.

The T68i is YEARS old, back from Ericsson days even, and the problem was fixed a long time ago. People were just willing to accept it to have a T68i, so they sold well. And providers didn't mind if you had a few more dropped calls to use up your minutes. Anyway, RF on the T300, for instance, is outstanding, so I imagine it'll only be better with the T610. I wonder how the aluminum shell will impact it, if at all.

My absolute favorite phone now is the Nokia 3650 and seeing this new SE phone had me hesitate.

BUT its missing many cool things compared to 3650:

No video recording, no expandable memory, smaller display.

On the other hand it seems that the SE is slightly smaller and has 65K colors (sompared to 4.5K on the Nokia)

I would still stick with Nokia if I had to choose.</strong><hr></blockquote>

The 3650 is baaad. The keypad is the worst ever (writing sms takes forever) and the phone is biiiig. Pretty funky to look at, but it s*cks to use.

    Sorry

With 3G still way off in the distance, I can see the T610 on my shopping list in six months - I love the T68i, but picture anything (MMS/messaging/emails/WAP2) is dreadful on a small, slow response, badly dithered, nasty palette, 256 colour screen!

Anyway, the T610 has the spec that I want in a GSM phone in the size/weight that I want, in a smart design that I want in my hand. And a Sony badge and a european design (apologies to the US readers) into the bargain. Cool - how often do you get for what you ask for? Just don't ask the price...

Hopefully SE have learnt the T68i/P800 lesson and don't have those products lead times to market (how long did we have to wait?).

CNet raved about the Nokia 3650, but it looks like a toy when putting it next to T610, so hopefully products like that will help SE claw back some share. Not that I dislike Nokia, or Motoroloa or Samsung or Siemens - but a bunch of healthy competitors in the phone market might stop it going the way of the PC market monopoly. And with many phone manufacturers sharing open-ish technology like Symbian, and largely sticking to standards (vCal, SyncML, MMS, etc) it's less likely to go that way. Not that MS won't try and do it their own way anyway.

Oh - here's my *theory* on people whining about T68i UI speed (understandably to some degree) - it's less the fault of the speed of the phone, more the screen reponse that's slow, try messaging without looking at the screen and it feels much quicker!

The New York Times ran a story today saying that the T610 has poor reception.

    <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/10/technology/10PHON.html?8hpib"; target="_blank">http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/10/technology/10PHON.html?8hpib</a>;

[quote] "Not only is reception a lot poorer, but the phones eat up battery life, so there's less talk time," said Michael King, a mobile data analyst with Gartner, a market research group. Games are nice, but "the majority of the time, we're talking on these things," Mr. King said. "If they can't do that well, what's the point really?"

Research from Ethertronics, a San Diego company that researches antenna capacity and manufacturers mobile-phone antennas, indicates that, all other things being equal, the radio strength of today's phones with internal antennas is 15 percent to 20 percent less powerful than that of phones with external antennas.

The NYT article actually only says that in general phones with external antennas have better reception than phones with internal antennas. The online version of the article pictures a T610 in the sidebar as an example of a phone with an internal antenna. But the article does not say specifically that the T610 has poor reception.

The article makes one other important point on the subject of internal antennas. If you're in an area with dense cell-tower coverage (typically in cities), you won't notice the slightly reduced reception.

What thing? The Siemens SL55? Well, it is not more or less than a slide-open-keyboard version of the S55 already available.

i have a nokia 6310i. its 1.5 times as long and wider, but the same thickness. but the streaming video was very impressive!

well, a rep came into our studio and he had one -- '3' have given him one on a couple of months trial (so they can convince him to buy them for his business). he let me have a quick go, but he was watching me like a hawk and i only had a couple of minutes...

it has bluetooth, but i don't know if it will sync -- its a motorola who have been very quiet on the mac/bluetooth front. so who knows.

the screen quality was ok, as he showed me a movie playing off it. a bit jerky and not that smooth, but not bad considering its a phone!

the thing that shocked me was the size and weight. you just won't believe how big it is until you see it. imagine a nokia communicator, not as thick...
