If any of you go to Apple-History.com and click here,<a href="http://www.apple-history.com/h8.html"; target="_blank">read the third paragragh</a>, you'll see it says Apple "suspended production" of the G4 cube(keyword: suspended). Could Apple have plans to re-invent the cube??? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

The Cube could possibly come back in the future, but I think that the Cube got reincarnated into the new iMac. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

Well since they "put it on ice" as they said, of course there's a possibility of a future Cube. I don't think we'll see it soon if ever.

Add 1 PCI slot, price it cheaper then the PM (with comparable specs) & I'd be sold ... Those old cubes are still look'n pretty attractive ... was almost tempted to bid on one in Ebay today (but I was strong & resisted).

Why bother? It was a neat product and all but it failed and the new iMac provides no room for it to come back. If they did bring it back they would have to change the form factor. The two main flaws are the external power supply and the vertical optical drive. However, a true micro tower would be neat, something sized between the Cube and the PowerMacs.

I could understand about the external power supply, but was the vertical drive really a problem?

psantora is right and beat me to it. I'll just add what Jobs said about the Superdive not working vertically. Of course it's possible he only said that to get a Ive to build the new iMac like a sunflower.

I forgot that Jobs had mentioned that they were slower.

Woa, if the power supply is internal, the Cube wouldn't be

fanless, and if the Cube isn't fanless, then..well, it wouldn't

be the Cube. I see no flaws there at all.

Well, the cube could come back as something it should have been in the first place; a machine between the Pro Towers and AIO iMac.

    Here's the plan:

Make 2 models of the cube. One with an 867MHz G4 and the other with a 1GHz. 1MB L3 cache. Use a 133MHz system bus using PC133. And add a DVD/CDRW drive and make a DVDRW external drive available at an extra cost to cube buyers.

Make the new towers all G5 or fast Dual G4's. 4 DDR-SDRAM slots and 4 PCI slots.

The drive in the cube doesnt have to be vertical does it? They could put the slot on one of the sides.

What was wrong witht the external power supply? I think that's a great idea actually, cuts down on heat, might even be a good idea in a tower.

I miss the cube, he was the coolest looking of mac products ever released, imo.

No you can't place the drive horizontaly, 5.25" drives are too long to fit into the cube's case.

They'd have to increase the footprint and thus make the whole cube bigger, bad idea.

Apple announced that the Cube was indeed "suspended" when they ceased production. This is not new news. I suspect that when the G5 Towers finally come out, at MWNY?, they will be mini-Towers in off -white. No more large CPU's.

The Cube is a masterpiece of design and engineering, it's only flaw was in it's marketing (ie pricing). I'd like to see it come back as the low end Power Mac. At $1699 with a GHz Apollo and WD 100 GB SE (as I have in mine). Give the full towers dual Apollo's until the G5 arrives. Put the DVD combo drive in there too. I would buy another one the day it is announced. Until then I'm going to build mine to dual 500's. Anybody got a DP 500 AGP they'd like to sell?

    "Add 1 PCI slot"<hr></blockquote>

and a standard size graphics card. Out the door Price &lt; $900.

My one question, which I still don't know is," How much does it add to the cost of a motherboard to implement ONE PCI Slot? If it is almost as expensive to implement ONE as it is to implement 3 or 4 or 5, I doubt Apple would do it and the cost remain competative."

I think the price could be higher (I don't want Apple skimping on the specs). I was thinking low end $1300, high end maybe $1700.

A full sized AGP slot would be helpful. Of course these two additions would make the Cube a bit larger but I think it'd make it a lot more attractive to the Prosumer Market that Apple was targeting.

Exactly what's wrong with having the power supply outside? It seems like a great idea to me. Why do some people not like this? I assume there's nothing stopping you from having the power supply on the floor under your desk or something right?

    Edit: Added paragraph

Also, any horizontal drive placement in the cube would destroy the convection chimney. Bad idea.
