Apple's "12 Days of Gifts" continues to roll on, with Monday's offering of critically acclaimed film "Hugo" marking the fifth free item offered to users in the United States, while those in the U.K. can instead download the holiday classic "Home Alone."

Hugo

Each day's gift can be discovered by using Apple's official 12 Days of Gifts app available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Users can download Monday's free gift, Hugo, direct from iTunes for free without installing the iOS app.

Rated 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a winner of five Academy Awards in 2012, "Hugo" is a love letter to cinema from acclaimed director Martin Scorsese. An adaptation of the children's book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," the 2011 film stars Asa Butterfield, Jude Law, Chloe Graze Moretz, Emily Mortimer, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Ben Kingsley.

The two-hour, six minute film is available in high definition 1080p or 720p, as well as standard definition. The free offering also comes with iTunes Extras content, including "Shoot the Moon (The Making of Hugo," which features interviews with the cast and crew.

Previous U.S. gifts from Apple include a Justin Timberlake single, the iOS game Tiny Thief, Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2014 e-book, and a single from Lorde.

Apple offers different gifts to users across the globe, meaning Monday's offering of "Hugo" is limited to those in America. U.K. users, for example, receive a free copy of the film Home Alone as their free gift on Monday.

Home alone suits me, I felt like watching it again and was too tight to spend the money to rent it. Thanks Apple

At last, a freebie I like. From the trailer, Hugo sounds like it will be great and imaginative film.

I'm sure if you are resourceful enough, you can find a way to download it for free sans iTunes. ;)

I wish apple will consider giving the following apps for free. iPhoto?iMovie?GarageBand?Pages?Numbers?Keynote.  There must be alot of people out there like myself who would be happy to get these apps.  Since apple is giving them for free with new purchased devices hopefully they would consider to give it away for free for people who have older devices.  Thank you apple for what you have given away for free.  Some people will be happy and other not but in the end free is free no matter what.  Thank you.

As far as I know 911 works everywhere. Blame Hollywood.

I have a feeling I'm going to open a can of worms here...

I know it's not universally popular, but I'm one of those people who really do like 3D movies when the effects are used well. Hugo is a great example of that. I already own the movie on 3D Blu-Ray.

I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, and if I didn't already own it I would definitely download Hugo. But to me this gift shines a spotlight on the fact Apple doesn't offer 3D versions of movies for those of us who (gasp!) actually like it. I understand the technical restraints, but they don't seem insurmountable to me.

It production was very good but I also found the story to be an exceedingly dull storyl. I came away neither liking or disliking it, and quickly forgetting about it until it was mentioned here this morning.

    Because Apple doesn’t support gimmicks.

It is highly unlikely they will ever do that. Why? Because it's not about the apps but rather the upgraded hardware. They want you to buy the newer devices so when you do you get this 'gift without purchase'. If they just give it to everyone folks have less reason to buy new hardware which is what they want since that is where they make money. Make no mistake Apple might not use making money as their major guideline but that is still their business.

It's a kids movie from a kids book. Most adults will find it boring due to the lack of real violence, sex or a complex storyline
