OSX 10.9 - Illustrator CS5 crashing at launch.

  Someone else here has that crash with CS5 version 15.1 and 10.9 so the updates obviously don't fix it:

  Do you have any 3rd party plugins installed? If so, move them out of the Plug-Ins folder. If not, try renaming the Plug-Ins folder and see if it launches when it has no stock plug-ins to load.

  I tried renaming the folder and leaving the name of the folder intact but removing all the contents, I still get the same crash message.

  Have you tried creating a new user, logging in as that user and launching it? Also did this start after upgrading to 10.9?

  So I tried doing that, with a new Admin User Illustrator will launch, however, it does not load any of the tools or plugins, essentially it only displays a file but you cannot edit it in any way. 

  I tried opening a new file from template and before opening it Illustrator gives a warning with a list of plugins needed to edit the file that are not available. 

  I went a look in the plug-ins folder under Illlustrator and the plugins in the list are there, I tried opening a couple of them clicking on them, and an error message says that the file cannot be opened, it's either blocked or being used. 

   

  I really have no clue what's going on with this Illustrator. I appreciate the help!

  Adobe appears to have set custom names on everything. If you select the plug-ins folder and open the Get Info window, where it says Name & Extension, change Plug-ins to say:
  
  Plug-ins.localized
  
  Renaming it removes the extension. This leaves the folder name as Plug-ins but it adds the extension that Adobe looks for. You might have to restart Illustrator a couple of times for it to load the plugins properly again. The fact that it loads ok in another account suggests that your user preferences and caches need to be deleted. These are in /Users/username/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator... If you remove the Illustrator ones in your main account, that should clear out the preferences. There's also a shortcut to do this by holding option+command+shift when launching Illustrator:

  Ok so that did the trick for the new account, the plug-ins now load normally and the Illustrator is functional. 

  My main account is still not working even after flushing caches and everything. 

  I have to work around the fact that all my files and everything are on my main account but at least now I have a working version of Illustrator. 

   

  Thank you very much!

   

  I hope mac or adobe come up with an update that fixes the issue completely.

  The only difference between the accounts would be what's in your home folder. You can try moving everything beginning with Adobe out of the preferences folder as well as from /Users/username/Library/Application Support.
