Let's Recap a Little: G5 FACTS

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
So much speculation and speculation about speculation. Cloak and dagger, RDF, and sources up the ying yang.

I thought perhaps we could try to set back, forget the rumors and evaluate what we have as fact.

Facts:

1. Crystal Clear Promotion ends Jan 31st.

2. PowerMac ship dates are 10 days at the Apple Store.

3. References to the G5 have appeared in connection with a smattering of software products (VueScan, Epson Sweden, etc.)

4. The iMac is definately stepping into PowerMac territory.

5. There seems to be zero rumor convergence.

Now, to me, 1 & 2 strongly suggest new PowerMac releases sooner (very soon) rather than later. How long do you expect Apple to go with 10 day lead times for machines? Its now like the supply of all G4's just dried up. Don't suggest that popularity of the new iMac has caused chip shortages, I seriously doubt demand could be THAT high. Item 3 suggests a G5 release. Item 4 says nothing either way, other than that the PowerMacs need to get faster. Item 5 says to me that no one really knows anything, which leaves more inclined to believe what is coming is a large, well-guarded secret. If it were just a speed bump would Apple really care enough to obscure things this greatly?

Unless there is a special press event it looks like G4's. You just don't release a major new product (or Steve doesn't) without at least some fanfare, and I think its obvious Steve is trying to let the iMac gain traction before releasing anyhting else. Given the shipping delays and expiration of the promotion I would lean towards an Apple even in early Feb., as I think a 10-day wait is too long for a company to have for a month until Seybold roles around. MW Tokyo is illogical for PM release, but would make perfect sense for a PowerBook speed bump incorporating Apollo if the PowerMacs are bumped at Seybold.

In short, new machines (whatever they are) sooner rather than later. G5's at a press event or Seybold. Finally, rumor sites don't know jack, I think the latest MOSR contribution proves this. Specs close, but still different from what the most recent thinking had been.

I hope this may have helped to let people step back and re-evaluate.

Cheers!

Apple can simply extend the Crystal Clear Promotion past Jan 31st. I think that Apple did something similar with the Mac OS X v10.1 upgrade.

Anyhoo, it is a definate CONFIRMATION that we will see a new PowerMac, but what is it? Speedbumped G4's are highly likely, but it would be a real shocker to see the new G5's. One thing that did get my atention is an article at OS Opinion stating that IBM may be the supplier of the G5. If this turns out to be true, Apple's future and the Power PC line look very bright indeed.

I don't think there will be any update to the PowerMac line till seybold. Then we will see G5s. 1.2 1.4 1.6Ghz. I don't know this for a fact but based on everything I have come across this is the best guess I can make.

You mention that there are very few G5 rumors and that there is no convergence between the g4 rumors. This is a very good point. Although It could also be that no one believes the G5 rumors because they seem to extreme (to wonderful). After Motorola's slow Mhz speeds for so long no one thinks that it will change any time soon. Maybe it won't. I think it will.

Motorola has lowered our expections so low that several Mac users would never expect the G5 ranging from 1.2-1.6 Ghz to appear for months to come. One thing that I can say, is that I have a gut feeling that we will see something amazing with the Pro Line in the next couple of months. I hope it is the G5.

Is Apple even doing anything special for this Seybold? Usually they don't do a keynote or much fanfare for the spring Seybold. Does anyone have info about this? If Steve isn't speaking, I doubt we'll see anything.

My bets are on a special event in February with shipping announcement at Seybold or MWT.

OK, this is how these things get out of control. What you read at OS Opinion was not an "article." That guy (name escapes me) has no idea what is going on within Apple, Motorola, or IBM. His pieces are nothing but semi-informed speculation, same as you read around here. Just because he paid for a domain name doesn't give his opinions any greater validity.

There is no concrete evidence to suggest that IBM will fabricate G5s for Apple.

Well, I have a question for everyone.

-If we do get a lame speed bump within a week or so, when will the next gen tower (Apollo or G5) make it's appearance?

    March, May, July?

Don't forget to add April to that list... NAB is in April and while NAB isn't the first thing you think of for an Apple hardware announcement anything is possible and in years past when a NAB conference rolls around speculation usually follows.

Whoa, settle down. There is no where in my post that I said IBM was going to replace Motorola as the supplier of the G5; maybe that is why I said may replace. Why can't somebody, Kelly McNeill, post what he feels like could happen. Yes, he is speculating and he clearly expresses his speculation in his article, or what ever you want to call it.

"I don't have any concrete evidence to support one theory over another, but as far as this constant guessing game is concerned, IBM is a distinct possibility that very few have considered. Either way, we'll probably find out sometime in the near future. "

I see nothing wrong with taking a rumor and expressing a different side to it. Heck, he could be right. But don't shoot somebody down becauase they have a prediction, especially when they are not trying to pass it off as factual information.

M5884, I didn't mean to imply there had been few G5 rumors, there have been tons. Oddly more in the past then in recent history.
