Next-gen iPhone may boast 5" 'full HD' display, flexible AMOLED for 'iWatch'

In its 2014 display tech forecast, research firm DisplaySearch predicts a 5.5-inch high-resolution screen could be an option for Apple's next-generation iPhone, as well as a possible AMOLED "iWatch" device.

The DisplaySearch projections are merely speculation, but the firm has seen some success in predicting Apple's hardware moves. As such, AppleInsider offers the following information for purposes of discussion only.

The firm is eyeing at least two displays as possible candidates for the "iPhone 6," reports CNET. A lower end option would be a 4.7-inch unit with a resolution of 1,600-by-900 pixels that equates to a density of 386 pixels per inch. This would result in a more pixel-dense display than the current iPhone 5s' 4-inch 1,136-by-640-pixel screen, but keeps the 16:9 aspect ratio, an important feature for app continuity.

On the high end, Apple could employ a huge 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 1,920-by-1,080 pixels, yielding a pixel density of 407PPI. This unit would be built on low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS), a technology thought to be used in current iPhone 5s screens manufactured by Samsung.

As for the so-called "iWatch," DisplaySearch sees AMOLED as a viable option, which would be Apple's first use of the display technology. Specifically, the firm points to flexible 1.3-inch or 1.6-inch AMOLED units, each with 320-by-320-pixel resolutions for respective pixel densities of 348PPI and 278PPI.

Finally, a guess as to a larger iPad was tossed out, with the now imaginary tablet bringing a 12.9-inch display boasting a 2,732-by-2,048-pixel resolution.

Rumors from December said Apple was in fact considering a larger iPhone and 12.9-inch iPad for release later in 2014, though no hard evidence has surfaced to back up those claims.

I'm going to wait for a 4K display on my 1.3" screen iWatch. It just gets too pixelated otherwise.

5.5"? That would be nice as long as it's wider this time, not stretched like it was run through the taffy machine like the 5/5s.

What is DisplaySearch speculation based on? Their wild imagination? I wish rumor sites would quit posting stupid speculation that isn't based on anything more than someone throwing darts at the wall hoping eventually they'll hit the bullseye,

Hence the reason why AI said this was posted for the sake of discussion. If we didn't have speculative rumors to talk about, why have a rumor site? Otherwise, we'd have only 3-4 stories a day to read and comment on. Remove the Samsung related stories and it's down to 1-2 articles a day.

Apple's fairly consistent with their scaling resolutions. They'd rather go 2270x1280, to make its easier for the developers to use x2 again as the non-retina resolution becomes obsolete. So, the current @2x assets would just be reused to tackle the new 2270x1280 resolution.

These companies need to understand there is a difference between what apple builds as a prototype vs what they actually ship. There will be only one new iPhone size.

I bet they will stick to the current iPhone ppi and just add another row and column of icons I don't do the math but it will be something along 1280x720 at 326ppi and whatever screen size that will equal.

If a large iPhone is announced it won't be the only model.
There will be only one new iPhone size.
And why would that be? I can easily see a future with two sizes. If Apple were as set in their way as some people here appear to be ther would be precious little innovation. An open mind is a pre-requisite.

Finally I'll have much, much more estate on my iPhone rather than just 4". It was about time that Apple kept up with the times, I'm sure they'll also adjust the UI to perfectly fit the screen size. I'm thrilled!

Sick and tired of people only considering their needs and wants like if they were at the centre of the universe. They are quite happy to force others into their world. It is HIGH time Apple makes a 5" plus phone, it can be alongside standard 4" screen or even go back to 3.5" to appease the "smaller the better" brigade, I don't care as long as we are given the choice.

more likely there are a lot more ayes than nays

people wanting to keep the status quo, limiting choice, and forcing others in their comfort zone are the same who screamed when Apple moved from 3.5" to 4", which now they accept as optimum size. They weren't listened then and should not be listened now.
