Excellent point. Android fans have invested heavily in Samsung hardware since it carries the flag for Android. If Samsung moves away from Android will Android fans move away from Samsung? Are Samsung customers Samsung fans or Android fans? We know Apple customers are Apple fans in general, not necessarily iOS fans.

Excellent questions. Though I don't think that there isn't a definitive answer.

I've been saying this since day one.  Samsung is just blowing smoke at Fandroids long enough to ride them like the town mules they so they can put out their own ecosystem and jettison Android when the first opportunity comes.  Fandroids were just lame tools that Samsung was so obviously using.

It's an efficient plan.  With Samsung being Android's largest partner, Android will wilt and die a long-needed death as the botched iClone experiment it was once Samsung goes to TizenOS.

The even better part is that since Samsung absolutely sucks at anything in hardware, and especially software, their mobile business will pretty much implode shortly afterwards.

It's all going right on schedule.  Fandroids are beginning to look like deers staring at headlights, and they deserve to be!
If you assume the author is correct and Samsung will dump Android it won't really matter. The same author believes Google is dropping Android too.

hold up.  They sold Bada to who?   Tizen is Bada merged with Meego which was Nokia QT merged with Moblin 2 which was OpenedHand Clutter merged with Moblin which was lite version of Gnome GTK which was based on Linux.

why would it not? There is already an ecosystem established.

Because the market share of the other manufacturers is tiny.

Okay. So let’s remove all the plants from that ecosystem. How long does it last?

I honestly don't know. Maybe we find out soon enough using Microsoft Windows as a subject.

That's not a new theory. I read that several years ago on another site. Rumor was Google was going to hit the reset button and release a Chrome OS for phones.

    What is this, SamsungInsider.com?

Oh stop. Samsung is Apple's most direct competitor (and perhaps Apple's biggest IP thief), so news about their strategies and tactics is highly relevant. If you don't care much for it just pass on it. (I'd much rather read about this than recycled analyst pap).

if they could do it they would. This would be the "its not gonna be easy" part.  Google could care less if its this sack of poop platform or that sack of poop platform as long as its their platform that they can control and no one is able to get in their way from harvesting user information. Like Apple.

They want to be the man in the middle  of all user interaction and sensors in the device.   If Apple would have allowed them that freedom in the first place there would be no Android.

    Good laughs.

I concur. I understood this point exactly as you summarized.  Anyone who got confused needs to go back and reread that editorial.  Google could care less about Android, as long as they have a vessel to be the man in the middle of all consumer interaction with the internet and access to all data being generated by sensors in the user's device.

I guess I missed out on the covert part since its been pretty public since, well,... 2011. Of course they've since sold Bada and are now tinkering in Tizen.

Hopefully they'll release something pretty soon. If it's better than Android, WP, and iOS, I'll happily switch.

I think Samsung is going to face some uphill challenges with it (in addition to many of the same challenges they have with Android). If they use it to lock things down and force the use of more Samsung apps I think most Android users will largely avoid it and stick with one of Samsung's Android offerings (or another manufacturer's). For the people that wouldn't mind being inside a walled garden, Samsung has the challenge of building one that is better than Apple's... Good luck with that.

Have to give Samsung credit though, I think they identified their targets in 2011 fairly accurately and for 2012 executed very well to their strategic plan.

The covert aspect is that Samsung’s volume play and its pointed eradication of HTC (which most Android fans will tell you makes much better phones than Samsung, as Samsung itself acknowledged above) are serving its plans to destroy Android from the inside out.

Market research companies, however, continue to report that Samsung’s volume is supporting and leading Android as a strong competitor to Apple. Just because you read AI doesn’t mean the rest of the tech world is as well informed about what is happening.

Exactly. It'll be interesting to see where this leads.

Which I'm all for. The sooner Java gets the boot the better.

C and it's derivatives will do so much more for developers and should have been something Google did in the first place like Apple and MS did by carrying C/C#/Objective-C over.

Either I need to go back and reread more carefully or maybe this could have been empathized more clearly and straight forward as you stated here. I honestly did not pick up this point upon reading the article. Maybe a little bit of both?

Samsung knows where its bread it buttered, if samsung ever dumps android it dumps the Western markets, and google goes over to some chinese OEM and says, hey you want to take over Latin America and south East Asia and sell cheap android phones? Lets be best friends.

Without android, Samsung kills its high end market, and all but makes certain google and a bunch of rag tag OEMs eat the low end.

Samsung is incompetent at software, and it is so far behind. You actually have a better chance at Nokia become Nokia pre-iphone then you have samsung surviving with out its Pimp google.

Well actually, Tizen is an outgrowth of what Nokia had been working on prior to Microsoft shifting the company into a Windows Phone failure.

Also, Samsung is floating Tizen as an open source project similar to Symbian or Android. The advantage would be that it doesn’t come with strings tied to handing Google the top spot in mobile advertising and services like Google Maps and Now.

So Tizen : Android is something like Linux : Windows: a less restrictive option for companies sick of sharing the wealth with a platform vendor that is making stabs at competing directly with its own licensees on the hardware side of the business.

Also, Samsung doesn’t need to be a genius at software. Android is full of problems. Tizen only needs to be "carrier friendly good enough"

I think that is what we had before iOS and Android.   No mature Ecosystem, carrier friendly good enough.  Right?   I think it needs to be more than that if you want to get people off Android. Having Samsung abandon Android and convince people to follow them onto Tizen with "carrier friendly good enough" without the mature ecosystem in non starter for most who are already invested into Android App.   On the other hand, I am not saying many are.  Having good user experience with email, browser, messaging, and Facebook might be enough for some consumers. Probably the kind of people who would choose Windows Mobile over Android or iOS.

If Samsung tries to go their own way with a Tizen phone, they would need to decide if they want to market it as premium or low end phones or both.  If they go low end, they would be racing to the bottom and effectively competing against their own Android models.  If they go premium they are going to need to be better than both Apple and their own Android models at the user experience.  Good luck with that one.    more "its not going to be easy"

That is the reason I believe they'll ditch Android especially since Google hasn't been hit with any lawsuits yet.
