He didn't pretend to know specs. He said there were faster G4s using SOI (7455), not the Apollo. Which was what was unveiled.
(Assuming Dorsal is a genuine hardware tester, which I think most people think he is) Should Dorsal lie and make up detailed specs to make it all more believeable?
Did you not read the Motorla engineer article on Maccentral? He's the real thing. He says the 7455 IS the Apollo. No doubts. Straight from the horsey's mouth. The 7460 is a fabrication. I cannot even find reference to it on Motorolas sps site. We invented it. Maybe Motorola will use it for a 130nm Apollo, but by then it will have a different code name. And hopefully a better bus.
Guys Apollo was just another code-word / buzz-word, so relax. Nobody at Motorola or Apple said that a .13µ 7455 equivalent (which would likely be called the 7460) will not *also* [bear the Apollo name].
Who said Apollo was a mutually exclusive thing - that once one chip was given that designation, that another similar chip couldn't be given the same designation / family name? No one.
At this point, more important than minor "incremental" clock speed ehnacements to Apollo family is an enhanced FSB with support for DDR. There is a great thread over at Ars which talks about the MPX bus, whether it can go beyond 133MHz and how DDR (PC2100) ram would really be a much bigger boost to performance than would an extra 100 MHz here or there. We're focusing on the wrong component (things being what they are after yesterday's announcement).

Pretty obivous Hannibal and zamboni take pleasure on taking jabs at macs. And try to spin it off by saying how mac users attack them at their every negative post. Because of such thing, im sure many mac users got sick of ars and left the board. Though on the mac fourm, someone detailed very infomrative look on this new g4 update. anyways, just my rant. wish those mac users still hanging around at ars would come over to AI ;B
I know i stopped going there a while ago. They only opened the Mac boards so the mods and admins can chime in with stupid ass jabs, and you can't do anything about it. It's basically mental masturbation.

I'm with Jeremiah on this one, considering the width of speculation seen on this board (2Ghz+ G5's at MWSF!!!)for him to have gotten everything right about the latest release of G4's, 'cept the fact that they were dual, says he's probably playing with prototypes just like he says.
Dorsal is the real deal no doubt. Look at that post he made and tell me that isn't the new PMG4. An MPC7450 variant with SOI is exactly what we got, at speeds the same as he mentioned basically and all had the full 2 MB L3 Cache like Dorsal stated. I think those 2 systems described are Apple's next 2 systems, the one's just released and then the G5. Interestingly, he stated no Level 3 for G5 but full L2 512kb which is EXACTLY what I've seen around the web for the G5. Everything else is now ready to be implemented, like FireWire 2. Now all we need to know is how ready was that G5 system for release Dorsal? Give us percentage wise at the time you got it.
Well if there is a 7460 I think it's a safe bet (although nothing is safe with mot) that it will be made on hip7. But with out a super update to the bus, it'll just be YASG (Yet Another Stop Gag). Personally I hope for an integrated memory controller.
But I thought of an idea this afternoon on my way home from work. What if Apple stretched the MPX bus to its limit by placing the memory controller directly underside the processor on the daughtercard? Trace lengths would be kept at the minimum posible and they could probably get speeds as high as 250-300MHz even though it's SDR. One way to facilitate this is to design the main controller so the pin outs match the pinouts on the processors MPX bus. I don't know the technical feasibilty of manufacturing this but I have seen it on other boards (2 chips soldered bottom to bottom with only the PCB seperating them). Then the memory controller would have the necessary bandwidth to fully utilize the DDR RAM. You can even position the daughter card connector very close to the DIMM slots to reduce degraded performance.

Wow you guys are easy to impress.
Dorsal did NOT predict "exactly what we got". He predicted an entire range of different models with different specs, different combos of mobos and CPUs. It would be virtually impossible for Apple NOT to release something Dorsal predicted, since he predicted so much.
Furthermore, doesn't it strike anyone as being odd that Dorsal gets this hardware to evaluate the same week it comes out? Wouldn't he have had these test machines a few months prior to release, and thus have been able to give us the scoop a month or two in advance? I think the reason he didn't is because he had to wait for the rumors to run their course, and then predict everything under the sun.
You want to see someone with real info, check out a person like Time. He says, Powermacs on day X, and then on day X we have powermacs. In constrast, there's Dorsal, "powermacs on day x, y, or z, and if not one of those days, then between day a and d, but not after c or before q, and somewhere within the range of m-o.
Then the powermacs come out on one of the 30 days predicted by Dorsal and you're all like, "wow, he's for REAL!!! He really DID know when they would be released!"

Obviously, he knows nothing of release dates for these things because only Steve knows for sure . . .
Maybe the G5 will come out sooner, and the revised G4s will into the iMac/portables
or maybe the G4++ will come out next . . .
