Apple is fundamentally a hardware company revenue-wise.

And by that reckoning, Google is fundamentally an Ads company.

Google is an Ad company, but they are listed by the SEC as internet information provider (I guess ads could be construed as information) because that's how they see that type of business model.  Apple is listed as a consumer goods/electronic industry company that makes computer devices.

Google has nothing to sell except your information and other cloud services.. It does not make Ads. It sells your information to people who make Ads and places their ads in front of people on the internet.   That is why it is an Internet "information provider". It provides your information to others (anyone who will pay them, no questions asked, including spammers, scammers and other criminals).

From Google's point of view, you are not the customer, you are their product being sold to anyone willing to pay.

Google generates most of their revenue by placing websites by companies that pay Google to have their link igher up on the results page, ad clicks that are generated by users because many companies place ads on Google results pages and when someone clicks on that ad, Google makes money.

I don't know how much they make by directly selling our private information to others.  It's not clearly identified by Google.

I don't believe Google sells any personal information to other companies. In fact they almost certainly do not.

You are correct when it comes to purely "anonymous" people who use anonymous services such as "Google search", if you can keep your browser from using cookies.  However, there are services which are not anonymous and don't use any cookies, but are linked to direct google accounts before they will work like Google Mail, G+, Google Glass, Google Android, etc etc.   All of these generate revenue by collecting your personel user information and all communications you have with others via the account or in the device and  create targeted demographics which are sold to anyone willing to buy it.

I don't think they need to sell your specific home address or your email address to anyone.  Why bother? Instead, they already can deliver whatever ad advertiser wants to send you right in your gmail email account view, Google device view in any app they choose, the next time you check your email or use any google app on your phone.  They allow advertisers to target you and they can deliver their ads right into your email view, phone view, google glass view, youtube view, etc.  All accounts for which you are directly linked.  With Google Fiber ISP, they can deliver it right to your home to any device that gets access to the internet regardless what kind of device you use or what services you use.   Nothing is free and "privacy" boundaries can be overcome through Google creativity .  Understanding the business model and what you are getting into is something most people are unwilling to think about. Simply being "Free" is all they need  to green light usage.

In summary,  "Internet information provider" is completely correct as it describes Google correctly.    They provide information to anyone willing to pay. Since the customer is not willing to pay, or more accurately Google doesn't not even attempt to charge, that leaves the advertisers.

    Dan,

explain why they would scan your gmail account? when they have openly said in court that they do and why they do this.

I don't work for Google but according to their privacy statements they scan for keywords, and the primary purpose is probably for targeted ad placement tho there's other reasons for it. AFAIK most email services do keyword scanning, even Apple. I don't know their primary reason involves advertising tho it could be a reason. In any event Google does the ad placements themselves. They don't sell your personal information to other companies for placing ads directly. That would be pretty dumb since Google's revenue comes from placing ads on behalf of companies like GM, Toyota, ATT, Sears, Target and others. Probably even Apple resellers if not Apple themselves. If you have doubts about how they earn the majority of their revenue do a bit of research. It's pretty much all public and not at all hard to find in their quarterly statements.

    Dan,

Google denied scanning for ads. in  Sept. 2013.  Unlike Microsoft who clealyr says they do not scan for ads in this same article.

7 months later Google admitted it does in fact scan to target ads at you, and says it has updated privacy notice accordly.

Google is not a trustworthy company.  Its obvious what they are doing and why. Not sure why you are trying so hard to defend them. Its so obvious and why lawsuits have been filed about this point.
